Named General Bursaries

If you are selected to receive a General Bursary the name of your bursary may be amended to a named general bursary.

  • Only the name of your award will change; the value of your General Bursary assistance will not change depending on the name of the award

Eligible students will also be considered for named general bursaries open to students in any faculty or school.

Athletic Student Bursary

Established in January 2005 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to second-, third-, or fourth-year student athletes enrolled in any program of studies. The bursary will be administered in compliance with U SPORTS and OUA regulations.

Reginald Barker Memorial Award

Established in May 2001 by family and friends in memory of Reginald Donald Barker, B.A. '38. Reg Barker was a gifted athlete and WWII hero who demonstrated leadership on the football field and bravery and self-sacrifice in action. Awarded to a second, third, or fourth year student enrolled full-time in any four year program. The candidate must be a member of the intercollegiate football program, demonstrate financial need, and exhibit leadership qualities.

Nathan Richard Cowan Memorial Award

Established in October 2002 by family, friends, Smith Engineering and the Department of Economics in memory of a remarkable individual, Nathan Cowan (1977-2002), B.Sc., B.A. (Economics) 2002. Awarded on the basis of financial need to second, third, or fourth year students enrolled in Smith Engineering or the Department of Economics. Awarded normally in even-numbered years to students enrolled in Smith Engineering, and in odd-numbered years to students enrolled in the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Candidates will be student athletes with preference given to a member of the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Sailing Team, who may demonstrate aspirations to participate at a higher level of competition. The award will be administered in compliance with all O.U.A. and C.I.S. regulations for athletic awards.  Application, with resume, should be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards by October 31. Elwin and Beverley Derbyshire Award

Established by Elwin Derbyshire, B.Sc. 1965, and Beverley Derbyshire. Awarded to students enrolled full-time in the second, third or fourth year in any four-year program on the basis of financial need, academic ability, proven leadership qualities and involvement in the intercollegiate men's hockey program.

R. David Ghent Bursary

Established by family and friends in memory of R. David Ghent, B.Sc.'84. Awarded on the basis of financial need to an undergraduate student in Mining Engineering. Preference will be given first to a student who is a member of one of the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ ski teams, and second to a student involved in other athletic activities. In the event there is no qualified student in the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining, the bursary may be awarded to a student in another program in Smith Engineering. Selection will be made in consultation with the Head of the Department.

Rolf Lund Award

Established by friends and colleagues and awarded to a full-time upper year student on the basis of financial need and a minimum GPA of 2.7, who has completed a minimum of one full year with the Track and Field and/or Cross Country team. A general bursary application, along with two letters of reference, should be submitted to Financial Aid and Awards. Selection will be made in consultation with the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ track Booster Club

Mary Lyons Bursary

Established in May 2015 by the late Mary Lyons and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (Honours) or a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Kinesiology degree program with preference to student athletes who are on the competition roster of a Gaels interuniversity women's athletic team or club. The award will be administered in compliance with all U SPORTS and OUA regulations.

Pamela McDonald Memorial Award

Established in March 2005 by Bruce McDonald in memory of Pamela McDonald, BSc 2003. Last revised in February 2024. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and athletic excellence to student-athletes in the third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science and who are on the competition roster of a Gaels interuniversity athletic team. Preference will be given to students enrolled in an academic plan in Life Sciences. The award will be administered in compliance with all U SPORTS and OUA regulations. Applications should be made to the Associate University Registrar, Financial Aid, and Awards. 

William E. Miklas Memorial Award

Established in December 2002 by family, friends and colleagues in memory of William E. Miklas, B.A. 1963, MBA 1965. Awarded on the basis of financial need to second-, third-, or fourth-year Commerce students enrolled full-time in the Smith School of Business who are student-athletes on an intercollegiate sports team at ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. If there are no eligible student-athletes the award may be granted to upper year Commerce students who demonstrate financial need and who have participated in intramural sports at ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. If the students chosen are student-athletes on an intercollegiate sports team, the award will be administered in compliance with U SPORTS and OUA regulations.

Plumley Family Award for Football

Plumley Family Award for Football - Established by Kent Plumley, B.Sc.(Chem.Eng.) 1960, LL.B. 1963, and Sandra Macdonald Plumley, B.A. 1966. Awarded to second-, third- or fourth-year students enrolled in any program on the basis of financial need and who play on the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Golden Gaels Football Team. The maximum amount of each bursary will be according to OUA regulations and will adhere to all other OUA and CIS guidelines for Athletic Awards. Application should be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards by October 31. Value: variable

Justin Schwieg Memorial Bursary

Established in April 2006 by an anonymous donor and awarded on the basis of financial need to second, third, or fourth-year students enrolled in any undergraduate program at ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, with preference to students who are currently playing on the interuniversity football team. Preference will be given to students whose permanent address at the time of admission to ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ was from one of the following counties: Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, or Leeds and Grenville. The bursary will be administered in compliance with U SPORTS and OUA regulations.

Frank Tindall Bursary

Established by friends and colleagues of Frank Tindall and awarded on the basis of financial need to student(s) in any undergraduate program. Awarded to student-athletes in a degree program at ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ and who are on the competition roster of a Gaels interuniversity athletic team. Preference will be given to student-athletes who are on the competitive roster of the Football team. The maximum amount of each bursary will be according to OUA regulations and will adhere to all other OUA and U SPORTS guidelines for Athletic Financial Awards.
