Meet Libby Hearn: Manager of Academic Operations
Libby Hearn has been named the Manager of Academic Operations, Student Services Division, Faculty of Arts and Science. The new position offers her an opportunity to support FAS students and serve as the main contact for undergraduate chairs and assistants for on-going support, while contributing to the development of a strong culture of academic integrity.
“I oversee a number of processes to support students, faculty, and staff that include academic progression, grades, the Dean’s honour list and exams,” says Hearn. “I am also working to decrease the departures from academic integrity in the Faculty of Arts and Science by developing a culture that prioritizes it and increases awareness of the value of scholastic honesty.”
Hearn, who has worked at the university for 31 years, initially worked as a research technician in several FAS departments, but she also has extensive student support experience working as the Residence Admissions Manager for the past 11 years. She says her knowledge of the University processes and the professional network she’s formed at Queen’s is invaluable.
She describes herself as “a calm, honest, and positive person which I believe lends itself to a solid work environment.”
In her new role, Hearn says she sees a number of challenges including the transition of bringing students back to campus and the switch from online learning to on-campus classes as pandemic restrictions ease.
“I think that remote learning has caused some significant challenges where academic integrity is concerned,” Hearn says. “I see a great opportunity in creating a community of practice where colleagues at other universities, students, faculty, and departments can all work together to find a holistic approach to minimizing departures from academic integrity.”
She says her ultimate vision for her evolving role is that by reviewing current practices, she can identify efficiencies allowing more time for focus on operations that ultimately improve operations within Student Services.
“I am delighted that Libby has joined our Student Services team,” says Jill Atkinson, Associate Dean (Academic). “University operations continue to become more complex and Libby’s depth of knowledge of the university, her administrative skills, and her commitment to supporting students and staff alike, make her an ideal manager.”
Despite all the pressures of the new position, Hearn prioritizes personal time in her busy schedule. “I am happiest surrounded by my family and friends at my home outside of the city enjoying as much outdoor time as possible. I love to kayak, boat, swim, entertain, and travel.”
