Appendix Two

Statement of Ethical Conduct (November, 2002)

  1. The university holds itself to a high standard of ethical conduct, both within its own community of scholars, students, alumni and employees, and in all of its external relationships and interactions -- with businesses and commercial enterprises, with other external organizations, and with friends and donors.
  2. In particular, the university will not accept gifts, enter into business relationships, or accept external support that will compromise its public image or commitment to its academic mission and essential values as articulated in the university's "Principles and Priorities" (Senate, 1996).
  3. The Essential Values which govern our actions include:
    • Intellectual integrity. Rigorous standards of intellectual integrity must be upheld in all teaching, learning, and research activities.
    • Freedom of inquiry and exchange of ideas. The University commits itself to remain open to free enquiry and the free expression of ideas, both of which are basic to the University's central purpose. Any restrictions proposed on free expression must be openly stated and subjected to careful public scrutiny and evaluation.
    • Equal dignity of all persons. ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ cherishes the diversity of human experience and background, and supports the freedom of individuals to study, teach, work and carry out research without fear of harassment, intimidation or discrimination.
