In an increasingly interconnected and globalized world, an interdisciplinary education, combined with new ways of learning and opportunities to understand local and global communities will equip our students with skills that are in demand among employers, professional schools, and post-graduate programs: critical thinking, communication and independent judgment.
We wish to express our sincere gratitude to all alumni, faculty, staff and friends who directed one-time or annual gifts to the programs in Languages, Literatures and Cultures. We cannot overstate the direct benefit of gifts of any size to the academic experience of students in our programs. Annual Giving helps us attract outstanding students and especially facilitates their participation in one of our exchange and study-abroad programs. Very often, returning students say these experiences have changed their lives.
Samuel Bozek (BAH '12) spent a year abroad at the University of Freiburg and won the Ernst Loeb Memorial Scholarship. This is how the scholarship changed his perspective:
"It is far too easy to spend an entire university education with minimal interaction with those from different backgrounds, but studying abroad forced me to constantly engage with those who had completely different upbringings. The conversations I have had, especially about the place of art in society, have gone on for hours. The ready movement of ideas across different cultures in Europe is something that I would not have been able to experience had I stayed in Canada. I have tried foods unheard of, read books that have not yet been translated, and interacted with countless people that I would not have without the opportunity to study abroad. That is why I write this to thank you for your contribution to the Ernst Loeb Memorial Scholarship. Many thanks from me, and all those who have benefited from your kindness."
