Field Studies

The study of the earth is becoming increasingly more sophisticated, with the application of the latest analytical, geophysical, and mathematical techniques. However, the fundamental object of study remains the earth in all its complexity.

As part of a rigorous curriculum, the Department of Geological Science and Geological Engineering believes that direct exposure to rocks in the field is essential if students are to bridge the gap between lecture-hall theory and real-world practice.

Second Year

The Fall field course in 2nd year is designed to familiarize students with basic geological field methods and prepare them for the Geological Field School held at the end of the second year, in folded metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks near Sutton, Quebec.

Third and Fourth Year

Third- and fourth-year courses include numerous field trips in the Kingston area, Quebec, and adjacent parts of the United States. In addition to the many day trips, several week long field schools are available to 3rd and 4th year students in the program, including 3rd year sedimentary geology field course to the US;  a 4th year structures/sedimentary field course to Quebec; and a 4th year GeoEng field course to Timmins, Sudbury. In addition a one-week carbonates field trip travels to Bermuda each year.

The department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering offers Field Trips for the following courses:

Overnight Trips Day Trips
GEOL/E 301 GEOL/E 221
GEOL/E 401 GEOE 281
GEOE 410 GEOL/E 321
Bermuda Field Seminar for select students who complete GEOL/E 368 GEOL/E 300
GEOL/E 419 GEOL/E 337 and 368

“All the trips included in the Geological Engineering curriculum at Queen's have been a learning experience and an adventure. The hands-on knowledge has been invaluable for summer jobs, and the great friendships born out of these trips are also unforgettable. I can whole heartedly say that we are lucky to have the opportunity to participate in them and are definitely glad to have such wonderfully helpful TAs along for the ride with us as well.”

Field Trip Fees

The cost of field trip fees, including transportation, accommodation and food (when it is supplied), will be borne by the student.

Subsidies are provided by the Department as funding permits. We are very appreciative of the support provided by many companies and alumni for our Field Education program. This funding helps to reduce the field trip fees to below cost, for all students.
