Program Overview
The Vice-Principal Research is pleased to announce a university-wide call for proposals to enhance and expand high-quality research training environments at Queen’s through doctoral trainee support to attract new outstanding individuals to the University.
With funding from the Bruce Mitchell Research Program (BMRP), this call seeks research applications from Queen’s full-time faculty (tenure track, tenured, clinicians with protected research time) that will expand doctoral trainee enrolment in their research groups beyond the traditional complement, through their outstanding research training programs and supervision.
This BMRP competition will support a minimum of 50 doctoral trainees, by providing the selected faculty members with $35,000 per year for a 4-year term for each new doctoral trainee to Queen’s proposed in their respective research program. Funding requests to support up to three (3) doctoral trainees newly recruited to the University per application is allowed.
This competition represents an opportunity to engage in novel multi-disciplinary research projects. As such, proposals coming from groups of faculty members working together with co-supervisory arrangements are encouraged.
Doctoral trainees must be recruited and actively enrolled by September 2025.

¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ the application process
Applicants must be full-time Queen’s faculty members, who are in the tenure track, tenured streams or clinicians with at least 40% protected research time.
Applicants must hold Tri-Agency funding (i.e., CIHR, NFRF, NSERC, SSHRC) or be actively seeking Tri-Agency funding at the time of application.
Doctoral trainees to be supported by the Mitchell funding must be newly recruited to Queen’s subsequent to the award and are meant to be above and beyond the normal graduate trainee complement in the host research group.
Trainees at Queen’s entering the respective doctoral program without officially obtaining a MSc (e.g., Mini-Master’s) and are not eligible to receive Mitchell funding.
Evaluation criteria
Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:
- Quality of the proposed research program, including the role the doctoral trainees will actively play in pursuit of research outcomes (e.g., outstanding potential for new knowledge and innovation, feasibility, equity/diversity/inclusion in research design and practice).
- Quality of the training environment, including training strategy, research facilities and resources (internal and external), documented success of past trainees, strategy for diverse recruitment of trainees, access to development opportunities, availability of external research funds to support research activities).
Co-supervision is encouraged, including co-supervision across disciplines. Faculty members who wish to co-supervise a PhD student must identify a lead administrative Faculty.
If the application comprises multiple faculty members as co-supervisors, a lead applicant and their home department/faculty must be clearly identified.
Applications comprise:
- Proposed research area, highlighting novelty (1 page)
- Quality of the training environment (1 page)
- An abbreviated CV, using the provided template, for the lead faculty member applicant and where appropriate co-supervising faculty members.
Applications will be triaged for eligibility and reviewed by a Vice-Principal Research Review Committee, which comprises the following membership:
- Deputy Vice-Principal Research (Chair)
- Associate Vice-Principals Research
- Dean of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (or delegate)
- Minimum of three (3) faculty members with extensive experience in academic and/or applied research and graduate trainee supervision
- Vice-Principal Culture, Equity, and Inclusion (or delegate)
The Review Committee will make recommendations for funding to the Vice-Principal Research.
Submission of applications: December 15, 2023
Review committee meeting: Week of January 15, 2024
Notification of decisions: By end of January, 2024
