CIHR Strategic Grant Programs

CIHR offers a variety of grant programs to support . These strategic programs fund targeted research areas and are distinct from the CIHR Project Grant program, which supports investigator-initiated research in all areas of health research.

Overview

Priority-driven grant programs aim to advance health knowledge and its application, in specific research areas identified by CIHR in consultation with other government departments, partners and stakeholders, in order to improve health systems and/or health outcomes in these priority areas. Grants may fund research or provide career or training support.

Below is an overview of common program types. Please visit to view available initiatives, or subscribe to to be alerted when new programs are launched.

Team Grants
 Vary (~$1M+) Vary Funds collaborative research teams in targeted research areas with specific program objectives. May have requirements for team composition. May have a registration or letter of intent phase.
Operating Grants
 Vary (~$100K to $1M+) Vary Funds targeted research areas with specific program objectives. May be submitted by an individual or group of researchers, depending on the competition. May have a registration or letter of intent phase.
Catalyst Grants
 ~$100K 1 year Provides “seed funds” to start a new research initiative in a targeted research area.
Planning & Dissemination Grants
 ~$10K to $25K

1 year

(Summer & Winter competitions)

 Supports pre-project planning or knowledge dissemination activities. Not intended to support the direct costs of research. Participating CIHR Institutes or other sponsoring partners will specify research areas and/or specific requirements.

 

How to Apply

Consult the specific instructions listed in ResearchNet for a particular competition. Strategic CIHR programs typically require a Signature Page with a signature from an Authorized Official at the Institution Paid. Please submit a TRAQ DSS and contact a Research Projects Advisor to obtain sign-off. Because this program does not use an e-approval process, grants submitted in ResearchNet will be sent directly to CIHR, not University Research Services.
