Queen’s understands and supports the City of Kingston’s efforts to further curb illegal gatherings in light of the pandemic.

The university has been clear that it does not condone the behaviour of those who disregard public health regulations around social gathering, and shares the community’s concern about reckless and aggressive behaviours. As the KFL&A Medical Officer of Health has said, we are seeing transmission occurring during close, unprotected contact between individuals in social settings where physical distancing is limited, and face coverings are not being worn. This presents a danger to the entire community and must stop.

We appreciate and support the work of our front-line police, campus security and city by-law officers who are trying to keep our community safe. With the pandemic, it is imperative that we abide by and respect the rules being enforced to protect the public health.

We do not want to see the behaviours of a few put at risk the academic experience that our students, staff and faculty have waited 18 months to resume. Students referred to the University for breaking the law will also face a review under our Student Code of Conduct. Cases considered under the Student Code of Conduct can face a range of sanctions up to and including expulsion.  We take this behaviour very seriously and want to be clear that in addressing it, we will continue to prioritize the health and safety of our community.
