Diversity in Kingston

Kingston's demographics are changing as more newcomers are welcomed to our city. According to the latest census in 2021, Kingston has a total population of 132,485 representing a mix of cultures, ages and households.

  • In 2021, there were 5,470 Indigenous people in Kingston (City), making up 4.2% of the population; the majority reported a single Indigenous identity, either First Nations, Métis, or Inuk (Inuit).
  • 12% of the population identify as immigrants, with 9.3% arriving since 2011
  • The number of racialized persons living in Kingston has grown steadily over the years, increasing from 9.7% in 2016 to 13.4% in 2021
  • Kingston has an active Francophone community and several to support Francophone residents

All major faith groups are represented in Kingston and most have an online presence outlining services and programs.

Kingston's ethno-cultural groups offer a warm welcome to newcomers. The , held every September, celebrates Kingston's rich diversity with free, family-friendly activities including live music and dance performances, workshops, international markets and cuisine.

2SLGBTQIA+ Community

Kingston was ranked the most gender-diverse city in Ontario (2021 Census). It has the largest proportion of transgender and non-binary people in Ontario and has the fifth most gender-diverse urban centre in Canada (Source: Faculty of Arts and Science; May 2022). There are numerous support services, groups and resource centres that provide connection, resources, and 2SLGBTQIA+ positive support.
