Zowie Jones is a first-year M.A. candidate working under the supervision of Dr. Jenna Healey. Her area of research focuses on venereal infections vis-a-vis gender constructs within late-nineteenth-century Canadian medical discourse. By examining Canadian medical journals from this period, she intends to investigate how the intersection of masculinity, disability, and venereal disease contributed to medical professionals’ conceptualization of STIs as a social problem. She will also explore how these discourses attempted to reconcile the discrepancies between long-held beliefs and emerging scientific discoveries as they came into conflict with the ideals of late-Victorian masculinity.
