Paige Groot is a first year PhD student working under the supervisor of Dr. Amitava Chowdhury. Her research interests are in Early Modern environmental history and she focuses on the British Empire in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. She is an Historic Geographic Information Systems (HGIS) specialist. Her doctoral research will focus on the eighteenth-century British Caribbean and will use HGIS to investigate how the environment was a tool used to control enslaved and indentured labourers to maintain the plantation system, but also a tool for rebellion, resistance, and identity-building for Afro-Caribbeans, Indigenous, and other racialized groups.
