The History Department is excited to launch History Summer Plus at Bader College starting in the summer 2023 term! History Summer Plus offers upper-year History students the opportunity to study as a cohort for six-weeks at Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex, U.K.
At History Summer Plus, students have the opportunity to conduct primary research at local and national archives in the U.K and explore experiential learning both on campus and beyond.
As part of the History cohort, students will enroll in 6.0 units of History or History substitution courses and 3.0 units of electives. Course offerings include:
- HIST 402: Sex and Death in the Middle Ages, an upper-year seminar course which includes studying medieval primary source materials in museums, archives, and libraries;
- HIST 594: Independent Study Course, where students will have the option to engage in an independent research project under the supervision of a faculty member;
- IDIS 304: British Studies I, an interdisciplinary course that includes field trips to London to examine Britain through the study of history, politics, current affairs, literature, art and popular culture; and
- a wide range of electives to choose from
The Department of History is also offering a Summer Study Award for eligible students participating in History Summer Plus at Bader College. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and valued at a minimum of $1,000 per student, all eligible students accepted to Castle Summer Plus are automatically considered for the Summer Study Award for History.

At Bader College we help you prepare for success. From learning how to undertake archival research, to digital archiving, to honing your public speaking and debating skills for law school at the end of term conference, the skills you develop will help you long after the program has finished. Using our instructors' connections, we will help you in your primary research in places such as the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton, Welcome Trust, British Library and other major cultural institutions in London, and support you as you prepare for the end of term conference. We will also support you in publishing your work in undergraduate journals.
