History seminar students learn outside the classroom in tour of Kingston Penitentiary

Students enrolled in History 400-006 ‘Bordering on Criminal’ enjoyed a special opportunity for experiential learning on October 6, as they toured the imposing structure of Kingston Penitentiary. During the 1.5 hour tour, the entire class had the opportunity to observe the architecture and arrangement of the site and to learn about the lived prison experience from former corrections officers. Course instructors Rebecca Smith and Katie-Marie McNeill were delighted at the chance to take learning out of the classroom, expanding class discussions about prison development, 19th century moral architecture, and dark tourism through direct experience of Canada's oldest and most famous penitentiary.
