This seminar will examine a number of key developments and historical moments in European history from ca. 1600 to ca. 1850. The course is not a comprehensive survey. Instead, it is divided into individual modules that will allow us to explore specific themes and historical junctures in depth, such as the slave trade; colonialism; environmental change; the family and gender relations; the French Revolution; and the emergence of nationalist movements and the European revolutions of 1848. Within each module, we will examine a range of approaches and read both primary and secondary sources.
