This course explores the society and culture of Early Modern Europe (ca 1500-1750). Students will read and discuss recent works of social and cultural history with a focus on different historical approaches to the past and the use of different kinds of sources (literature; art; trial and legal records; inquisition archives). Particular themes include religion, magic, and witchcraft; science and medicine; popular culture & insurrection; women, gender relations, and sexual cultures; exploration, empire, and indigenous first contacts. The area of focus will be Italy, France, Spain, and Germany.
