Wendy Gilmour

I started off as a geography and politics student, but had an unfortunate encounter with statistics …. so switched to politics and history.  I was still able to incorporate political geography into my studies, and found a new perspective to broaden my horizons!

I found I needed a Canadian history class to graduate, and ended up in Canadian Economic History to graduate.  It was a fascinating way to learn about Canada and understand how our country was shaped.  It also set the stage for my interest in public policy and the role of government.

I was persuaded by some fellow history students to join them on a weekend morning in writing Canada’s foreign service exam, while in my fourth year. 31 years later, I can say it was one of my best decisions! I am privileged
to represent Canada as High Commissioner in Pakistan.

One of my favourite memories was Dr. Geoff Smith’s class in American diplomatic history: small group discussions that encouraged debate and forced everyone to think through and defend their positions.  A great precursor to real life!

Advice for History Students:
Take as wide a range of subjects as possible: and take advantage of the opportunity to learn areas that may not be of immoderate interest.  You will be surprised how it opens up new worlds!
