Hometown: I grew up in Dorset, UK and moved to Madoc, Ontario in 2007
Program: Geological Sciences
Current year: 3rd
Why I chose Geology: I came to Queen’s to pursue life sciences and medicine, my dream for as long as I could remember. In my first year I took The History of Life and The Dynamic Earth (GEOL 107 and 104) as electives. These courses were my first introduction to geology and I began to see the world differently thanks to a greater understanding of the processes that make our planet the way it is. I absolutely fell in love with the subject and decided to make it my major. Over the past couple of years, every course has made me fall more and more in love with rocks!
Geology is now truly my passion and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life exploring the world around me.
Student involvement/extracurricular activities I am involved with:
I have been involved with Miller club for the past two years, this year as the Social Events coordinator and the 3rd year curriculum representative. This year I am excited to be getting involved with the Queen’s student chapter of the SEG as well. I was a Gael for Orientation Week 2014, have been involved with ASUS peer tutoring, and was the First Year Events Advisor for my residence building in first year.
The professor(s) or course which has influenced me the most so far:
All the professors here at Queen’s are amazing and every course I have taken has been amazing, however I would not be here if it weren’t for Dr. Narbonne and Dr. McBride. Through their first year courses they showed me the world in a way I had never seen it before and sparked my passion for rocks! I cannot thank them enough for their enthusiasm and passion, learning from them was, and continues to be, a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Most memorable Queen’s experience so far: The field courses offered by the department are amazing and have been my most memorable experiences so far. Being out in the field with groups of like-minded students and professors is such an incredible way to learn. I am forever amazed by how much I learn on field trips.
After I graduate, I: Good question! This changes on a regular basis but my current thoughts are that I will take some time to work and explore different employment opportunities, possibly in resource exploration. I would also love to continue my education in graduate studies in the future.
One big goal I’d like to accomplish during my lifetime:
My main goal is to explore and travel the world; with geology I hope to find a career that means I could do just that!
