"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Geological Engineering so far. The professors have been fantastic, the class sizes are all small so you really get to know your classmates well, and all of the course content has been really interesting to me."
Hometown: Nanaimo, BC
Program: Geological Engineering
Current year: 3rd year
Why I chose Geological Sciences or Geological Engineering:
It was between Applied Mathematics Engineering or Geological Engineering for me, and after taking time to think about it I realized that I wanted a career where I could work outdoors and travel rather than looking at a computer screen doing data science for the rest of my life.
The professor(s) or course which has influenced me the most so far:
It would have to be a tie between Prof. Hutchinson and Prof. Diederichs. Hearing both of them speak so highly about their vast amount of experiences in the field of Geological Engineering really makes me think I made the right career choice.
Most memorable Queen’s experience so far:
There are many amazing Queen’s experiences to choose from, but I don’t think any can really compare to Engineering Frosh Week. Everything about frosh week was far better than I could have ever expected and getting to be a part of it for a second time as a frosh group leader was very memorable.
What do you like to do in your spare time?:
I love spending time outdoors and that was a big reason for choosing Geological Engineering. From hiking to snowshoeing to trail running, anything that can get me outdoors I really enjoy.
After I graduate, I:
I plan moving back to BC and work for a Geological or Geotechnical Engineering firm as an EIT as currently I am interested in geohazard mitigation. I am heavily considering pursuing a master’s degree or Ph.D. once I get a bit more experience in the field of Geology.
