A winning weekend for Gaels teams

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Head coach Dave McDowell picked up his 300th career win for the Queen’s Gaels through regular season and playoffs on Sunday in a 2-0 win over Laurentian Voyageurs on Miklas-McCarney Field.
Dominating the first half, the CIS seventh-ranked Gaels opened the scoring just before the break through Tara Bartram. The Gaels kept control in the second half and Jenny Wolever doubled the lead in the 85th minute.
On Saturday the Gaels defeated the visiting Nipissing Lakers 2-1 at Miklas-McCarney Field Saturday in their 2016 home opener, with goals from Jenny Wolever and Rachel Radu.
MEN'S SOCCER
Jacob Schroeter scored a pair of goals and picked up an assist as the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels men’s soccer team opened their season with a 4-2 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday at Miklas-McCarney Field.
After the visitors opened the scoring the Gaels responded in the 28th minute when Sam Abernathy headed the ball past the Laurentian keeper. After the break the Voyageurs gained the lead again in the 57 minute. However, that woke the home side as Schroeter then scored twice in two minutes to flip the script and give ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ their first lead. Patrick Van Belleghem added an insurance marker with just two minutes to play.
On Saturday, the Gaels won their season opener with a 5-1 victory over the Nipissing Lakers. Scoring for the Gaels were Patrick Van Belleghem, Tommy Hong, Jacob Schroeter, Kyle Owens and Michael Chang.
MEN'S RUGBY
The Queen’s Gaels men’s rugby team rumbled to a 71-17 victory in their season opener on the road against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday.
The Gaels enjoyed tons of time in the try zone, scoring often throughout the match. Kainoa Lloyd led ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ offensive efforts, scoring four tries. At the half, the tricolour were already up 45-7.
In the second half, the Gaels were just as relentless. Rookie Evan Underwood put 15 points up on the board with three tries. Dylan Young and Will McArthur shared kicking duties, converting five and three times, respectively.
WOMEN'S RUGBY
With mainly seconds players in the game for both sides, the Queen’s Gaels women’s rugby team beat the Ottawa Gee-Gees 25-10 on the road Friday to close out their preseason schedule.
With the regular season about to get underway for both the OUA and the RSEQ conferences, the teams agreed to play an abbreviated match of just 45 minutes.
Emma Faught, Abby Refausse, Lauren Cranfield, Molly Labenski and Jenna Press also scored tries for ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥.
