The African and Caribbean Students’ Association (ACSA) will conclude its Black History Month celebrations with Culture Show 2020: In My Element, a showcase of culture, identity, and self-expression featuring a wide range of performances including dance, spoken word, rap, music, storytelling, instrumental, and fashion.
Being held Saturday, Feb. 29 at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts, the annual Culture Show is the signature event for the Queen’s community during Black History Month and involves months of planning and preparation, explains ACSA President Bunisha Samuels.
It is also a key event for highlighting the diversity of the Queen’s community, creating new spaces to be visible, and fostering connections.
“Visibility, community, education – we hope to build community and create interconnections amongst a variety of different groups, to form unity, acceptance, and accountable spaces that are welcoming to authenticity, difference, and genuine inclusion,” says Samuels, an ACSA member throughout her four years at Queen’s. “We hope to promote educational opportunities for people to learn more about the experiences of marginalized students on-campus and how we navigate through a space like Queen’s, while also learning about the histories behind our communities, our cultures and the pride we have in our identities.”
Culture Show 2020: In My Element will offer a range of performances, visuals, and sounds that aim to transport attendees into each of the elements – Earth, Air, Fire and Water – in a way they have never experienced or seen before.
“Rooting the entire experience in identity, expression, and culture, every aspect of our show has been carefully curated and we are super excited to be able to put on a show, like this, that is the only one of its kind at ֱ and within Kingston,” Samuels says. “We look forward to attendees enjoying and experiencing ACSA's Culture Show 2020: In My Element.”
The event is open to all members of the Queen’s and Kingston communities. Tickets (General Admission - $25, Students -$15) are available at the . The Culture Show will begin at 6:30 pm at (390 King St. W.)
A portion of proceeds will help support those in the Bahamas impacted by the hurricane.
