Queen’s is updating its Weapons and Replica Weapons Policy, which prohibits the presence of weapons and replica weapons on Queen’s University property, including firearms, swords, bows, knives or replicas.

The updates provide greater clarity on existing requirements, expand on the definitions, add additional responsibilities to campus parties and partners, and add new information to address gaps in the policy. The university’s weapons policy was originally developed in 2001 and last updated in 2016.

There are allowances within the policy for exceptions including weapons carried by police and licensed guards while on campus, for the use of weapons in Queen’s University approved research by qualified researchers, approved sporting activities such as archery, and replica weapons for approved theatrical productions. The policy also provides details on the approval and control process for these types of activities, as well as the condition under which a weapon or ammunition will be seized and turned over to the Kingston Police Services.

Regular reviews of policies ensure they remain applicable and are an opportunity to address any identified gaps or changes and serve to make the policy better.

The new draft policy has been posted to the University Wide Policy Library and is located under Policies Currently Under Review. The policy is open for comment until Oct. 27, 2023, at 4 p.m. Feedback can be provided by email to policies@queensu.ca.

Queen’s fosters a respectful, safe, and inclusive environment for all students, faculty, staff, visitors, and contractors while promoting the highest level of safety and security in all its activities.
