SPORTS: Women's hockey hosts tournament; Archer grabs cross country win

Women’s Hockey
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels welcomed McGill, Montreal and Laurier to the second annual ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Invitational women’s hockey tournament Sept. 19 to 21 at the Invista Centre in Kingston.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ finished 2-1-0 after losing 3-0 to Montreal on Sunday, while McGill and Montreal led the tournament with 2-0-1 records. Laurier ended the weekend 0-1-2.
On Saturday the Gaels scored a 3-2 win in overtime against McGill and topped provincial rivals Laurier 3-0 on Friday. Caitlyn Lahonen picked up the shutout.
Cross Country
Jeff Archer ran to his first cross-country win of the season, leading the Gaels men to a fourth-place finish at the Western International, while ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ women's team placed sixth.
Archer ran a time of 25:16 for the eight-km race, finishing seven seconds ahead of the next competitor, Dylan Brown of Lakehead. The men's team placed fourth overall, with strong showings from Eric Wynans (13th) and Shane Favit (25th), as well as Brandon Thomas (40th) and Evan Andrin (41st). McMaster claimed the team title.
On the women's side, Shannen Murray led the squad for the second straight week, coming 22nd in a time of 19:13 over the six-km course. Following behind in 33rd, 34th, and 35th, within a few seconds of each other, were Gaels teammates Lindsay Kary, Sasha Zarnke, and Emma Plater. Western won on home turf.
Football
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels (0-4) fell to the No.6 Guelph Gryphons (3-1) 66-0 in Saturday afternoon’s football game in Guelph.
The Gryphons put up 32 points in the opening half and ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ was unable to get themselves back into the game. The Gaels were led by Derek Wiggan who finished with five solo tackles all coming for losses, two sacks and a fumble recovery.
The Gryphons were led by Jazz Lindsey and Robert Farquharson who combined for 213 yards rushing. Lindsey rushed for two and threw for three scores while Farquharson added one on the ground.
Men’s Soccer
The No. 8 Gaels (5-2-1) men’s soccer team had a tough weekend, losing both their games on the road – their first defeats of the season.
On Saturday, the Gaels tumbled 1-0 against the No. 4 Ryerson Rams, having gone down to 10 men in the 53rd minute after a red card. The Rams were eventually able to capitalize on the advantage with a goal in the 83rd minute off a header at the far post.
On Sunday the Gaels were unable to bounce back, falling 2-1 to Toronto. The hosts took a 2-0 lead by the break before the Gaels got one back a few minutes from the end as Eric Koskins’ header deflected in off a defender for an own goal.
Women’s Soccer
The Gaels women’s soccer team (4-2-1) earned a split in their weekend road trip.
On Sunday, the squad routed Toronto 4-0 with a pair of strikes by Jackie Tessier, while Brittany Almeida and Rachel Radu added goals of their own. Madison Tyrell earned the clean sheet, her fifth of the season.
On Saturday, the Gaels fell 3-2 to Ryerson. Tessier put Queen’s ahead just six minutes in but the Rams struck back just two minute later to tie it up.
Almeida put the Gaels back into the lead in the 67th minute but the Rams bounced back with a pair of goals in the closing minutes of the match.
With her three tallies on the weekend Tessier is now the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ women's soccer all-time scoring leader with 54 goals in her Gaels career.
Women’s Rugby
The Gaels women’s rugby team (2-1) were not the kindest of visitors Saturday night as they crushed Toronto 81-0.
With three tries and seven conversions, Lauren McEwen led the No. 4 Gaels.
The Gaels had a strong offensive first half with McEwen putting the first try and conversion on the board in the fifth minute, and never let up. The first half ended with Queen’s ahead 40-0.
Men’s Rugby
The Gaels men’s rugby team (3-0) picked up a 24-17 win against the Brock Badgers (2-2) on Saturday afternoon on the road.
The Gaels broke through first with Kainoa Lloyd getting a try followed by a successful conversion. Continuing their momentum, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ scored a penalty try under the post putting the score at 12-0. The Badgers were able to squeeze in their first try of the game before the halftime whistle, finishing the first half at 12-5 for the Gaels.
In the second half, the Gaels solidified their lead with another try from Lloyd and one from Brendan Sloan. David Worsley was successful on one of the two second half conversions. The Badgers fought back, scoring two tries and a conversion, but could not catch the Gaels.
Men’s Hockey
The Gaels men's hockey team travelled to Ottawa on Friday and earned an overtime victory against the UPEI Panthers in their second preseason game this year. Spencer Abraham tied the game at two mid-way through the third before scoring the game winner in overtime.
Lou Jeffries scholarship recipient Darcy Greenaway also tallied a goal.
Goalies Kevin Bailie and Chris Clarke received playing time as they combined for 29 saves on the night. Final shots for the game were 41-31 in favour of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥.
