SPORTS ROUNDUP: Perfect weekend for men's volleyball team

Men’s Volleyball
The Queen’s Gaels men’s volleyball team scored a pair of straight-set victories on the weekend, pushing their season record to 11-5.
The Gaels upset one of the best teams in Canada as they defeated the No.9 Ryerson Rams (12-4) on Sunday at the ARC 25-23, 25-23, 25-18. On Saturday they manhandled the Toronto Varsity Blues (3-13) scores 25-19, 25-17, 25-12.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ honoured their two graduating athletes prior to the game, their last regular season match on home court, as both Philippe Goyer and Aaron Nusbaum received recognition.
The Gaels are back in action when they hit the road to play Western on Saturday at 2 pm in London.
Women’s Volleyball
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels women’s volleyball team earned a weekend split on home court, picking up a win over the Ryerson Rams after falling to a powerhouse Toronto Varsity Blues squad. The Gaels’ season record now stands at 11-5.
On Sunday the Gaels took down the Rams (11-4) in straight sets 25-8, 25-19, 25-16. A day earlier the No. 4 Blues (14-0) controlled the match for a 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 victory.
On Sunday the Gaels honoured senior players Emilie Normand, Alexa Scarcello, Shannon Hopkins and Katie Hagarty in their last regular season home game of the season.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ will travel to Ottawa to take on the Gee-Gees on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2 pm in their lone game of the weekend.
Women’s Hockey
The No. 4 Queen’s Gaels women's hockey team split their weekend games, beating the Brock Badgers 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday, a day after a 3-1 loss to the No. 7 Guelph Gryphons.
Both games were close and the Gaels (13-3-3) got a pair of goals from Addi Halladay and Nadia Larocca against Brock (1-12-4). Jessica Wakefield, Taryn Pilon and Fiona Lester all found the back of the net in the shootout.
Danielle Girard scored against the Gryphons (13-2-3).
The Gaels play Thursday when they travel to Oshawa to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks (6-11-1).
Men’s Hockey
The Queen’s Gaels men’s hockey team tumbled 4-1 against the McGill Redmen in Montreal on Friday.
Brett Foy collected a late tally for the Gaels (9-12-1) as the Redmen recorded four goals in the middle frame. Finals shots for the night totaled 31-30 in favour of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥.
The Gaels return to action Tuesday when they take on the UOIT Ridgebacks (9-12-1). Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm at the Memorial Centre.
Men’s Basketball
The Queen’s Gaels men’s basketball team (4-8) team picked up a win and a loss on the weekend.
On Friday, the Gaels came from behind to beat the Toronto Varsity Blues (3-8) by a score of 82-74. However, they were unable to keep pace with the high-flying No. 3 Ryerson Rams (12-2) on Saturday, losing 90-65.
The Gaels are in Windsor on Friday, Jan. 30 when they take on the Lancers. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 pm.
Women’s Basketball
Despite a strong second half showing, the Queen’s Gaels women’s basketball team (8-4) lost 79-71 against the No. 8 Ryerson Rams (11-3) at the ARC on Saturday.
The loss snapped the Gaels win streak, which reached six games after Friday’s 79-77 overtime victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues (6-5).
They will continue their OUA season action on the road next weekend when they travel to Windsor to play the Lancers on Friday, Jan. 30 at 6 pm.
