Royal welcome for Canadian scholars

Hundreds of distinguished scholars, artists, and scientists from across Canada will gather in Kingston Nov. 17-19 for the annual general meeting (AGM) of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC).
“Having benefitted from a long and rewarding partnership with the Royal Society of Canada, we are especially delighted to host this year’s meeting during our 175th anniversary,” Principal Daniel Woolf says. “It’s an honour to welcome so many people who have made remarkable contributions to the quality of life in Canada, through their creative and scholarly activities.”
RSC, established in 1883, is Canada’s national academy, serving to promote learning and research in the arts, the humanities, and the natural and social sciences. Queen’s is currently home to more than 80 fellows of the RSC, seven members of The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, and many recipients of RSC awards and medals.
“We are thrilled that such an important meeting will take place in Kingston. Since its founding in 1945, the AGM has served to promote outstanding scholarly and artistic accomplishments and connect researchers with the broader Canadian public on important issues and topics,” says Dr. Steven Liss, Queen’s Vice-Principal (Research). “I look forward to a fruitful exchange of ideas and thought-provoking discussions throughout the weekend.”
The RSC AGM will feature three days of scholarly programming, as well as the induction of this year’s RSC fellows, the presentation of new members of The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, and the recognition of 16 prestigious award-winners.
Several , including David Bakhurst (Philosophy), Troy Day (Mathematics and Statistics), Daniel David Moses (Dan School of Drama and Music), Joan Schwartz (Art History and Art Conservation), and Craig Walker (Dan School of Drama and Music).
Three Queen’s faculty members and two scholars affiliated with Queen’s will also be presented as . The group includes Stéphanie Bélanger (Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research; Department of French at Royal Military College of Canada), Amir Fam (Civil Engineering), Christian Leuprecht (Political Studies), Parvin Mousavi (School of Computing), and David Murakami Wood (Sociology).
