On Sunday, Sept. 6, approximately 4,500 students will move into the university’s 18 residences. Move-in day signals the start of a new school year, and kicks off residence and faculty orientation for first-year students.
“Move-in day is exciting, not only for incoming students and their parents, but also for the current students, staff and volunteers who have been preparing for their arrival,” says Ann Tierney, Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs. “Many people have been working for months to ensure that our new students have a smooth transition to campus and to university life.”
This year, in an effort to ensure that the move-in process is as seamless and efficient as possible, the university is working closely with the City of Kingston and Kingston Police to ensure traffic flow throughout the day. Families are assigned morning or afternoon time slots for move-in. Parents are being encouraged to stop, drop and park: stop at a “drop zone” at the student’s residence, drop off the student and belongings – volunteers will be there to assist – go park in a designated parking area, and then return to help the student get settled. This will facilitate a faster and more efficient move-in for everyone, and dozens of upper-year students will be on hand to help out.
In an effort to improve traffic flow, particularly in the near-residence area, some roads will be closed beginning at 6 pm on Saturday, Sept. 5, and no overnight parking will be permitted.
Overnight closures include:
- Albert Street between Union and King streets
- Stuart Street between University Avenue and Albert Street
- Queen’s Crescent between Beverly and Collingwood streets
- Collingwood Street between Union and King streets (local traffic only)
Additional roads scheduled for closure at 7 am on Sunday, Sept. 6 include:
- Arch Street at Union Street
- George Street between Stuart and Okill streets
Streets designated one-way for the day include:
- Albert Street, southbound between Union and King streets.
- Bader Lane, westbound.
- Stuart Street, westbound between University Avenue and Albert Street.
- St. Lawrence Avenue, southbound from Stuart Street to King Street.
- Queen’s Crescent, westbound.
- Collingwood Street, southbound from Union Street to King Street.
- Okill Street, eastbound from George Street to Barrie Street.
The underground parking lots below Tindall Field (at Union and Albert streets) and the Athletics and Recreation Centre (at Earl and Division streets), along with all surface parking lots, will be open and free of charge on move-in day.
In addition, three will be held throughout the day. These sessions provide parents and guardians with important information to help support students as they transition personally, socially, culturally and academically to university life.
