Queen’s new campus-wide learning management system (LMS) will have a name all its own when it goes live for its pilot phase this fall.

onQ will be the name of the new LMS, based on the Brightspace by D2L platform, which will replace Moodle once fully implemented in 2016-17.

“onQ is a name that will truly distinguish the new LMS as the online gateway to Queen’s courses,” says Jill Scott, Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning). “onQ has a number of new tools that will help to enhance course delivery and the student learning experience.”

The name “onQ” was selected by an advisory committee comprised of faculty, staff and students that is providing input into the implementation of the new LMS. While Brightspace is the commercial name of the software platform, it is a system that will be customized for Queen’s and will have a uniquely Queen’s look and feel.

onQ will in September, when a number of early-adopting faculty members make the move for their fall courses. Full implementation across campus will happen in 2016-17. Over the coming months, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Information Technology Services (ITS) will work closely with faculties and schools to develop customized transition plans to support the transition to onQ.

Faculty members interested in learning more about onQ and the benefits of a learning management system are invited to contact Peter Wolf, Associate Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning) and Director of the CTL.

Earlier this year, the university announced the , the LMS platform developed by D2L Corporation that will power onQ. It will give faculty, students and other users access to a robust LMS that will support teaching and learning at the university.

Editor’s Note: onQ was formerly the name of a Queen’s employee magazine, which ran from Sept. 2010 to May 2012. With more than three years having passed since that magazine’s final issue, and the return of the Gazette in print, onQ will be a recognizable name that will distinguish the new learning management system at Queen’s.
