Queen’s community remembers Professor Emeritus Charles Bird

During his career, Dr. Bird served as Associate Dean of Research in the School of Medicine and was a recipient of the W. F. Connell Award for excellence in medical teaching.

The Queen’s community is remembering Charles Bird, Professor Emeritus in the School of Medicine, who died on March 21.

After obtaining his MD CM from ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ in 1956, Dr. Bird completed postgraduate training in Kingston, Toronto, and Montreal. He would return to ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ in 1965 as an M.R.C. Scholar in the Department of Medicine. 

Dr. Bird spent most of his career in clinical investigation with his best friend and colleague Dr. Albert Clark. Their research focused on the influence of hormones on certain cancers. This resulted in numerous publications in North American and European scientific journals. 

He was appointed Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Medicine in 1974 and in 1991 he was chosen by the graduating class of medical students as the recipient of the W. F. Connell Award for excellence in medical teaching. 

He was appointed as Emeritus Professor of Medicine in 1996 upon his retirement from the university.
