Newly-arrived faculty members received a warm welcome to Queen’s University thanks to a special orientation session providing them with information and resources ahead of the start of the 2023-24 academic year.
The session was the first fully in-person university-level orientation for faculty since the beginning of the pandemic and the Office of the Provost developed a new comprehensive faculty orientation program.
The first orientation session, which drew more than 30 newcomers, focused on providing information about campus culture and Indigenization-Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism (I-EDIAA), as well as opportunities to engage with recent hires and senior leaders to gain pragmatic advice as they start their time at Queen’s. A number of panel sessions and roundtable discussions brought together administrators, faculty, and support staff to offer information and connections to resources.
“These individuals represent the future of our institution and it is important that we provide guidance enabling them to succeed,” says former Interim Deputy Provost Nick Mosey, who hosted the event and led the orientation redesign. “This comprehensive, ongoing approach to orientation will hopefully provide a strong base for our new faculty to establish successful careers at Queen’s.”
The initial event will be followed by more faculty-level orientation events and centrally-organized workshops on areas such as teaching, graduate supervision, research, and renewal, tenure and promotion.
