Host Gaels claim third, fifth in OUA cross country

Cross Country

The Guelph Gryphons took home both team and individual first-place finishes at the OUA Cross Country Championships Saturday at Fort Henry in Kingston. The Gaels women’s team grabbed the bronze while the men finished fifth.

The women’s 6-km race was won by Heather Petrick of Guelph in a time of 20:02.44. Julie-Anne Staehli claimed the bronze for Queen’s in a time of 20:13.88. With placings of first, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth, the Gryphons took the overall team title, well ahead of the Western Mustangs. The Gaels were third with top placings of third, sixth and 12th.

On the men's side it was all Gryphons as they claimed the top four spots. Leading the way was Ross Proudfoot who finished the 10-km race in a time of 30:15.00. Queen’s best finisher was Alex Wilkie who placed fifth. The Gaels’ Eric Wynards picked up the top rookie award with a time of 32:54.56.

Football

The Gaels spoiled Carleton's playoff hopes in the final game of the regular season, beating the Ravens 37-15 in Ottawa on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

After a quiet first quarter, the Gaels took control of the second frame, as fifth-year defensive lineman Derek Wiggan scored the first touchdown of his Gaels career in his final game in the tricolour, recovering a fumble deep in Ravens territory and making it to the end zone to make it 15-3.

Curtis Carmichael added another score off a pass from quarterback Billy McPhee for a commanding 22-3 lead at the half.

Alex Carroll and Justin Gleben added majors to round out the scoring for the Gaels.

Running back Jesse Andrews had an outstanding game with 221 yards on 30 carries, while McPhee ends his Gaels career with 8,305 passing yards, securely in second place all-time for ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. With 39 yards on the ground in the game, McPhee lands in second place for most rushing yards in a career by a quarterback with 401 over his five years at ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥.

Women’s Rugby

The No. 6 Gaels women’s rugby team ended the season without a medal as they lost 22-19 to the Western Mustangs in the OUA bronze medal match on Saturday.

The Mustangs had the upper hand from kick-off, determined to grab the third OUA spot in the CIS Championshipand finished the first half with a 19-5 lead. 

The Gaels fought back in the second half, shutting down the Mustangs offense. Lauren McEwen dominated the pitch putting down two consecutive tries and kicking two successful conversions for the Gaels, closing the gap. However, the Mustangs were able to hang on for the win.

Men’s Rugby

The Gaels men’s rugby team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 69-5 on Saturday in their final regular season game. With the win, the Gaels end their season in first place with a 7-1 record, giving them a bye into the OUA semifinals next Saturday.

The Gaels got on the board early and often with Kainoa Lloyd leading the way with four tries, and singles going to Marc Van der wall, Ciaran McSwiggan and Marc Levin to lead the game 43-0 at the half.

After the restart Joseph Yelle, Adam McQueen and Teddy Taggart. After the Warriors finally got on the board the Gaels responded with their final try, once again through McQueen.

Men’s Soccer

The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ men’s soccer team ended their season with a 1-0 loss to the Varsity Blues in the OUA quarterfinals on Sunday in Toronto.

Nirun Sivananthan put the Varsity Blues ahead in the 17th minute, forcing the Gaels to play from behind for the majority of the match.

¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ had their best chance to tie the game in the second half, when a dangerous Toronto play forced the referee to give an indirect free kick to the Gaels inside the penalty box. Chris Michael tapped the ball for Henry Bloemen who couldn't get his shot past the charging wall.

¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ ended the regular season at 9-2-5 in the OUA East.

Women’s Soccer

The No.1 Gee-Gees were too much for the Gaels women's soccer team in OUA playoff action on Sunday, as ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ was eliminated with a 1-0 loss in Ottawa.

After the Gaels beat top ranked Ottawa in last year's playoffs in penalties, the Gee-Gees turned the tables to eliminate ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ from the playoffs this year. Julia Francki got Ottawa on the board 30 minutes into the match.

¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ upped the pressure in the second half but were unable to find the breakthrough

The Gaels finished the regular season with a 9-4-3 record.

Women’s Volleyball

The Queen’s women’s volleyball team got their season started on the right foot with a pair of home wins over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Gaels were pushed to five sets but edged out the Western Mustangs at the ARC, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 15-25, 15-12.

The team had an easier go of it on Friday as they swept the Windsor Lancers 25-20, 26-24, 25-17.

Next up on the Gaels schedule, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ (2-0) hits the road on Halloween to play Ryerson before playing at Toronto on Saturday.

Men’s Volleyball

The Queen’s men’s volleyball team opened the regular season with a pair of losses on the weekend.

On Saturday, the Gaels fell to the high-powered Western Mustangs 25-18, 25-23, 25-23 at the ARC.

A day earlier, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ lost to the Windsor Lancers in a hard-fought five-setter, 25-22, 26-24, 18-25, 25-27, 15-10.

The Gaels (0-2) head to Ryerson on Friday and Toronto on Saturday.

Men’s Hockey

The Gaels men's hockey team suffered their second loss of the season, falling 3-1 against the Western Mustangs at the Memorial Centre on Saturday night.

The Gaels opened the scoring in the second with a power play tally from Spencer Abraham but Weestern replied with three goals, including an empty netter to seal the win.

Final shots for the game were 49-41 in favour of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥. The Gaels (3-2-0) return to action Friday night when they travel to Trois-Rivieres, Que. to take on the No.4 UQTR Patriots (5-0-0).
