A quick roundup of Gaels athletes and teams in action over the weekend:

CROSS COUNTRY

Claire Sumner captured the gold medal at the U Sports Cross Country national championship Saturday in Quebec City.

Sumner pushed hard late and passed her teammate Julie-Anne Staehli, who led for most of the race, in the final kilometer. Sumner crossed the finish line in a time of 21:09.3 to finish first. Steahli hung on to take 10th place in a time of 21:50 to claim a spot on the All-Canadian team. Sumner also was named the U Sports MVP as the top runner.

Staehli made history for ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ as she concludes her Gaels career as a five-time All-Canadian becoming the first ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ student to accomplish the feat.

As a team the women claimed a national silver medal. Beatrice Cigagna, Shannen Murray and Lindsay Kary rounded out the Gaels scorers finishing 20th, 21st and 30th respectively.

The men's team finished eighth overall. Eric Wynands led the way for ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ finishing 27th in a time of 31:44.4. Rounding out the Gaels top five were  Mark Schmidt in 30th, Rob Kanko in 41st,  Joey Stel in 59th and Kevin Azocar in 70th.

MEN’S RUGBY

In a game for the ages, the Queen’s Gaels and Guelph Gryphons battled to the bitter end for the Turner Trophy with Guelph being crowned OUA Champions after a second round of kicks.

It took three extra halves and two rounds of penalty kicks, but the Gryphons defeated the Gaels in thrilling fashion to hoist the Turner Trophy for the first time since 1998.

Two 10-minute extra halves followed regulation. Maclain Wakefield gave Guelph a short-lived lead in the first extra half, with a convert, but the Gaels responded in the second extra half with a try of their own by Nicholas DeLallo followed by an Alex Colborne convert, and the score was tied again, 24-24.

Another extra period, this one sudden death, saw no scoring. That forced a five-player dropkick shootout, first from 22 metres out. When the first round ended 1-1, thanks to Perrin, the ball was moved back to about 35 metres. The Gryphons won that round 2-0.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The UOIT Ridgebacks and the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels met in the bronze medal match at the U Sports women's soccer championships Sunday in Wolfville, N.S. The Ridgebacks claimed the national bronze medal with a 1-0 victory.

Katherine Kohler-Grassau's goal in the 59th minute ended up being the winner.

The Gaels had a couple of decent chances in the closing minutes, but UOIT managed to close out the shutout victory.

Laura Callender was named the Player of the Game for the Gaels who finish one spot better than in 2015 when they finished fifth.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Markus Trence put up 23 points as ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ (4-1) defeated Western (3-2) in five sets on Saturday night at the ARC, 21-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-18, and 15-12.

After the Mustangs took a 2-1 sets advantage Trence powered the tricolour offence to 16 kills. On defence, the tricolour held the Mustangs to eight kills to force a fifth set. 

Trence had a game-high 21 kills and a game-high 11 digs. Hutcheson chipped in 12 kills and 10 digs.

On Friday, the Gaels defeated the Windsor Lancers (0-3) in straight sets 25-19, 23-16, and 25-19.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Queen’s Gaels (2-3) fell 3-1 to an undefeated Western Mustangs (5-0) team at the ARC on Saturday night, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, and 25-19.

After tying the match at a set apiece, the Gaels were unable to hold off the visitors. Caroline Livingston finished with a game-high 20 kills for the Gaels.

On Friday, the Gaels swept the Windsor Lancers (1-2) 25-11, 25-18 and 25-21 at the ARC.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels No. 7-ranked women's basketball team started off its 2016-17 campaign with two straight road victories, capped off with a 63-47 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday.

Robyn Pearson led all players with 16 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double while Emily Hazlett added 12 points, six boards and a game-high five assists.

In Friday’s season opener Katharina Holt and Marianne Alarie each dropped a game-high 14 points as the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels recorded convincing 85-54 victory over the York Lions in Toronto.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Jesse Graham tallied a team-best 18 points, and the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels men's basketball team (1-1) earned their first win of the regular season Saturday, coming back to defeat the Guelph Gryphons (0-1) 77-74.

Graham added four rebounds and shot 8-of-12 from the floor, while brother Tanner tallied eight points and a game-high 17 rebounds for the Gaels.

The Gaels dropped their opener on Friday, falling 83-74 to the York Lions in Toronto. Sukhpreet Singh scored a team-high 26 points

MEN’S HOCKEY

The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels (9-2-1) defeated the Western Mustangs (4-5-2) 4-3 Saturday in a shootout at the Memorial Centre in Kingston.

Scoring for the Gaels were Patrick Downe, Darcy Greenway and Harrison Hendrix while Spencer Abraham netted to winner in the shootout.

On Friday, the Gaels beat the Guelph Gryphons (5-6-0) 3-2 on a last-minute goal from Ted Hunt. Brock Edwards and Dylan Anderson also scored for Queen’s.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels (4-0-6-0) were defeated 4-3 by the Ryerson Rams (2-1-3-2) on Saturday at the Memorial Centre.

Emily Jukosky netted a pair of the Gaels after Addi Halladay opened the scoring.
