Sustainability Week kicks off today with an alternative transportation hub that features a variety of organizations promoting everything from electric cars to cycling. The event runs from 11 am – 4 pm at the corner of Union Street and University Avenue.
“The alternative transportation hub is a great way to promote alternative ways of getting around,” says Aaron Ball, Sustainability Manager. “Electric vehicles are an interesting technology. While not all of us are driving these vehicles yet, there will also be a focus at the event on cycling as an excellent form of active transportation.”
An opportunity to test drive electric vehicles is made possible by STRIVE, a Queen’s student-run committee that aims to raise awareness of environmental issues. Both a Nissan Leaf and a Toyota Prius hybrid will be on hand.
The event will also feature the , which designs, manufactures, and races prototype and concept vehicles in pursuit of attaining new heights in fuel efficiency, as well as the , a multi-faculty undergraduate team that aims to develop commercial applications of fuel cells.
The active transportation hub will also feature information from local bike shops and guides to the many local cycling trails in and around Kingston.
“Cycling is a great way to get to and around the Queen’s campus. It’s great for the environment and part of an active lifestyle,” says Mr. Ball. “Kingston Transit is also an easy and affordable way to commute to Queen’s, especially with the new Transpass program available to university employees.”
Transpass, a program that offers a substantial discount on a Kingston Transit monthly pass was introduced earlier this year, and nearly 160 Queen’s employees are currently subscribed. The program offers monthly passes for $53 per month, a 26 per cent discount off the regular $72 monthly rate.
