Gaels women’s hockey team wins on Senior Night

A quick roundup of Queen’s Gaels athletes and teams in action over the weekend:
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels women’s hockey team (13-8-0-0) pulled off a 3-2 come-from-behind victory in overtime against the Waterloo Warriors (9-6-1-4) in an exciting game on Senior Night at the Memorial Centre on Saturday.
Four graduating Gaels players – Addi Halladay, Stephanie Pascal, Caroline DeBruin, and Katrina Manoukarakis – were recognized before the game in a special ceremony.
The Gaels were first on the board as Hailey Wilson netted her fifth of the season but the Warriors tied it up midway through the second and went ahead early in the third. Penalty trouble would cost the Warriors and Manoukarakiswould tie it up with two minutes left.
In extra time DeBruin her away around a defender on a 1-on-1 chance and slid the puck five hole for the game winning goal.
On Friday the Gaels (12-8-0-0) cruised to a 3-0 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks (4-16-0-1).
After goalie Makenzy Arsenault made some key saves early on, the Gaels found their rhythm and Caroline DeBruin opened the scoring midway through the opening period. Devon Greenough then doubled the lead just 24 seconds into the second period and DeBruin added her second a few minute later.
MEN’S HOCKEY
The No. 10 Queen’s Gaels men’s hockey team (18-8-0) scored a 3-2 comeback win over the Nipissing Lakers (7-17-0) on Friday.
The hosts dropped behind 2-0 on a pair of powerplay goals in the first but kept working hard. They would finally get a breakthrough in the third with a powerplay marker of their own by Patrick Sanvido. Then with less than three minutes left, Slater Doggett tied it up with his 19th of the season.
In the dying seconds, a shot wide of the net bounced off the boards right to Spencer Abraham and the Gaels captain made no mistake to win it with 13 second left.
On Saturday, the Gaels fell 6-4 to the Laurentian Voyageurs (8-16-1).
After the Voyageurs opened the scoring Slater Doggett tied it up with 10seconds left in the first. In the second, the Voyageurs would score three times to make it 4-1. Duncan Campbell netted a goal early in the third but the visitors added another top put it out of reach. Francesco Vilardi and Jaden Lindo replied to make it interesting. However, an empty-netter finished off the comeback.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The No. 9 Queen’s Gaels men’s volleyball team (12-3) won in five sets against the York Lions (5-7) on Saturday, 25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 25-19 and 15-11.
After the visiting Gaels claimed the opening set, the Lions roared back to take the next two and put Queen’s on the brink. However, the Gaels responded with a key fourth set win and pulled away after being tied 8-8 in the decider.
Zac Hutcheson had a massive game with 22 kills.
On Friday, the Gaels beat the Nipissing Lakers (3-8) in four sets – 25-15, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-19.
After a dominant first set for the Gaels, the Lakers struck back to even the match. In a hard-fought third the Gaels pulled away late on a key service ace by Joel Rudd. With that the Lakers were broken and the Gaels clinically finished them off in the fourth set.
Hutcheson finished with 18 kills.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Queen’s Gaels women’s volleyball team (9-6) wrapped up a winning weekend with a four-set victory over the York Lions (7-6), 25-19, 25-12, 15-25 and 25-22 on Sunday.
The Gaels were dominant early on and jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The Lions struck back in the third and fought hard in the fourth but the Gaels were able to close out the match. Caroline Livingston had 12 kills and an incredible seven service aces.
On Saturday the Gaels swept Nipissing Lakers (3-9) in North Bay with scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 27-25.
Trailing early on the Gaels found their game, including a seven-kill stretch, and stormed back to take the first set. Playing better in the second, the Gaels were able to take the set relatively easily but the Lakers weren’t about to fold.
In a back-and-forth third set, the Gaels finally nailed down the win on a pair of service aces by Arielle Palermo. Palermo also led the way with 16 kills.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Queen’s Gaels women's basketball team (12-7) defeated the York Lions (8-11) 80-64 on Friday night at the ARC.
The Gaels came out firing on all cylinders, opening the game up with an 11-5 run through strong rebounding and ball movement. The Lions would respond, however, and led 19-18 heading into the second quarter.
The Gaels rediscovered their shooting touch, taking a 35-27 lead to the half and would further consolidate their advantage after the break, extending the lead by 10 while scoring a massive 29 points in the quarter. The Gaels controlled the tempo the rest of the way to close out the win. Marianne Alarie scored 22 points and Sophie de Goede added a season-best 21 points.
With the win, the Gaels clinched at least the four seed in the OUA East, meaning the Gaels are guaranteed a home playoff game in the OUA playoff quarterfinals.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ men's basketball team (10-9) defeated the York Lions (6-13) 111-71 on Friday night at the ARC.
After a tightly-contested start, the Gaels pulled away to grab a 24-16 lead in the first quarter as the Lion got into foul trouble. The Gaels extended their lead in the second quarter with some hot shooting and took a 50-33 lead to the half.
The Lions fought back after the break but the Gaels would hold and exploded for 31 points in the fourth quarter alone, picking up the team’s first 100+ point game of the season.
Leading the way for the Gaels offensively were Jaz Bains and Tanner Graham, who each scored 22 points.
WRESTLING
The Queen’s Gaels wrestling team was in Guelph this weekend for the OUA Championship.
The Gaels women's team was able to finish with 19 points to place sixth. The Gaels were led by a pair of OUA bronze medal performances by Megan Abel (51kg) and Karly Kudrinko (55kg).
For a fourth straight year on the men's side, and a fifth straight year on the women's side, the Brock Badgers claimed OUA banners.
