Gaels upend No. 6 Mustangs in OUA women’s hockey

A quick roundup of Queen’s Gaels athletes and teams in action over the weekend:
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels women's hockey team (11-7-0-0) picked up an important 5-2 win on Friday as they downed the No. 6 Western Mustangs (10-3-0-4).
The win propelled the Gaels from eighth in the standings to fifth with just seven games remaining in the season.
Despite being outshot in the first period, the Gaels were the first on the board as Alex Maw scored her first of the season. The hot hand continued into the second period as the Gaels scored three consecutive goals – from Hailey Wilson, Katrina Manoukarakis, and Taylor Hicks – to build a 4-0 lead.
After the Mustangs got on the board in the final minute of the second Manoukarakis netted her second of the game. The Mustangs added a late goal.
On Saturday, the Gaels picked up their second win in as many nights with a 2-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers (0-14-2-1).
Alex Maw scored her second goal of the weekend in the first period and Bryce Desa put the visitors up 2-0 just a minute later.
Only one shot, late in the first, beat Makenzy Arsenault, as she made 19 saves for the win.
MEN’S HOCKEY
The No. 8 ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels men's hockey team (15-5-0) dropped a 4-3 decision to the Concordia Stingers (12-7-1) Friday in Montreal.
The Gaels jumped out to an early 2-0 with power-play goals from Jared Bethune and Jared Lindo. The Stingers bounced back to tie it up in the second period but Liam Dunda put the Gaels back in the lead after 40 minutes.
A pair of goals in the third gave Concordia the win. Justin Fazio made 37 saves for the Gaels.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Queen’s Gaels men's volleyball team (8-3) was victorious in a three-set sweep against the Waterloo Warriors (3-6) with scores of 25-22, 25-23, and 25-18 on Sunday.
After a slow start the Gaels found their rhythm to take the lead and win the first set. In the second, tied 16-all, Dylan Hunt provided an ace to make the difference. The Gaels put together a solid third set to close out the sweep.
Adam Boljkovac and Zac Hutcheson each had 14 kills.
On Friday, the Gaels fell to the Guelph Gryphons (5-4) in four sets, 26-24, 22-25, 19-25, and 22-25.
The Gaels played a strong first set, maintaining a close back-and-forth game with the Gryphons, before closing it out with key kills from Malcolm Prentice and Zac Hutcheson.
However, the Gaels were unable to maintain the momentum and the Gryphons roared back to take the final three sets and the match.
Prentice and Hutcheson led with 12 kills apiece.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels women's volleyball team (6-5) picked up a big road win over the Guelph Gryphons (5-6), taking the game in five sets 25-20, 25-21, 18-25, 22-25 and 15-12.
The Gaels grabbed an early lead taking the opening two sets, but the Gryphons weren’t about to go quietly and rebounded to force a fifth and deciding set.
In a hard-fought final set, the Gaels took the lead about halfway through and held on for the victory.
Julia Wiercigroch finished the match with 16 kills
On Saturday, the Gaels fell in five sets against the undefeated Waterloo Warriors (11-0) 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-13 and 10-15.
This time the Gaels fell behind early, losing the first two sets, before rebounding to force a fifth set. In the decider, the Gaels kept it close but the Warriors were able to pull away and seal the win.
Caroline Livingston finished the match with 16 klils.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels men’s basketball team (8-8) fell to the Ottawa Gee-Gees (12-4) 84-68 on Saturday in Ottawa.
In a back-and-forth game early on, the Gaels led 23-22 after the first quarter and the trailed 41-40 at the half. After the break the Gee-Gees went on a 9-2 run which would prove costly as the game went on, with the Gaels eventually trailing 62-53 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Gee-Gees didn’t let up and closed out the game. Quinton Gray finished with 25 points.
On Friday the Gaels fell to the No. 1-ranked Carleton Ravens (15-0) 95-65 on the road.
The hosts came out strong and grabbed a 21-12 lead after the first quarter and stretched the lead to 41-26 at the half.
The Ravens cruised in the second half, extending their lead and easily securing a 30-point victory
Quinton Gray led the Gaels with 15 points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels women's basketball team (9-7) fell to the Ottawa Gee-Gees (14-2) 72-65 on Saturday in Ottawa.
In a fast-paced start, the Gaels found their zone defence exposed and trailed 20-8 after the first quarter on some cold shooting. The Gaels improved in the second but still trailed 39-23 at the break.
In the third quarter the Gaels narrowed the gap to 11 points, outscoring the Gee-Gees 15-10 ad closed to within seven in the fourth. But that was as far as they could go and Ottawa closed out the win.
Leading the way for the Gaels was Veronika Lavergne with an impressive 27 points, two shy of her career high.
On Friday, the Gaels fell to the Carleton Ravens (12-3) 60-52.
The Ravens got off to a hot start, as the home team charged out to a 20-4 lead after the first quarter.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ responded well in the second, but the Ravens were able to maintain their 16-point lead with the score at 36-20 headed to the half.
While the Ravens would stretch the lead out to as many as 20 points in the third quarter, the Gaels would go on an explosive late-quarter run, making five straight shots and cutting the lead back down to 10 at 48-38 heading into the final quarter.
The Gaels kept up the pressure but the ravens defence kept things under control for the win.
Sophie de Goede finished with a team-best 13 points and nine rebounds for the Gaels.
