Gaels romp into rugby final with 61-0 win over Marauders

Men's Rugby
The Gaels men's rugby team booked their ticket to the OUC finals with a 61-0 shutout victory over the McMaster Marauders on Saturday. The Gaels redeemed themselves against the Marauders who handed ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ their first loss in two years earlier this season.
The Gaels dominated the pitch right away, diving into the Marauders end with David Williams putting down the first try of the game in the second minute. The Marauders responded with an offensive push deep into Gaels territory but it would be the only time they reached the Gaels 22 in the first half.
The Gaels were too much for the visitors on the day and Kainoa Lloyd, Tommy Kirkham and Brendan Sloan adding a trio of tries. The Gaels continued to push forward winning a scrum at the five metre line to put James Dent through and Lucas Rumball added another score to put the Gaels up 40-0 at the half.
The Marauders put up a fight for the first 20 minutes of the half but Fraser Bruce, Lloyd and Williams put the game well out of reach.
Adam McQueen was good on five of six conversions while David Worsley was successful on all three attempts in the second half
The Gaels now head into the OUA Finals scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1 pm at Nixon Field where they will face the Guelph Gryphons who beat the Brock Badgers 18-0.
The Gaels topped the Gryphons 33-17 when the met in the regular season Oct. 4 in Kingston.
Rowing
In Victoria, B.C.,Larkin Davenport Huyer finished first in the women's single event to win national gold at the Canadian University Rowing Championships in Victoria, B.C. this past weekend.
The women's team finished fourth over the two-day championship while the men landed in seventh.
The women's team ended the championship with a total of 79 points, finishing behind Western, UBC and Victoria. Davenport Huyer led the way with her gold medal performance finishing the women's 1x in a time of 8:20.94, more than five seconds ahead of the second place rower from Laurentian. The lightweight women's 4+ found their way to the podium as well earning a bronze, finishing behind Western and Victoria. The Gaels rounded out the championship with a strong performance from the women's 8+ who finished fourth.
On the men's side the Gaels ended up with a seventh place finish totaling 46 points, just two shy of the sixth-place Carleton Ravens. The Gaels were led by the lightweight men's 2x who finished fourth. The men's 8+ finished their race in fifth.
Women’s Hockey
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ women's hockey team suffered back-to-back shootout losses on the weekend, falling 2-1 against the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday and 3-2 to Nipissing on Saturday.
Alisha Sealey scored for the Gaels against the Voyageurs while Stephanie Pascal made 30 saves.
A day earlier in North Bay, the Gaels battled back after falling behind 2-0 in the first period against the Lakers.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ pulled event in the final period as Clare McKellar and Megan Farrell buried back-to-back goals in a 50-second span. But Queen’s were unable to get the second point after overtime and the shootout. Caitlyn Lahonen made 18 saves.
The No.3 Gaels (5-0-2) are scheduled to return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Guelph, Ontario to battle the No.6 Guelph Gryphons (3-1-1).
Men’s Hockey
The Gaels men's hockey team earned a split in their pair of games over the weekend, beating the Concordia Stingers 4-2 Saturday night but losing 5-3 against the No.5 UQTR Patriotes.
On Saturday, the Stingers grabbed a 2-0 lead, but the Gaels responded with three straight goals to close out the second period with Darcy Greenaway, Corey Bureau, and Brett Foy finding the back of the net. Andrew Wiebe added another in the third. Goalie Chris Clarke made his first start of the season for the Gaels, earning the 27-save victory.
On Friday the Gaels jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third period on goals from Braeden Corbeth, Spencer Abraham and Eric Ming but UQTR roared back with four straight goals, including an empty-netter. Kevin Bailie finished with 43 saves.
The Gaels (4-3-0) return to action Friday night when they travel to Ottawa to take on the Carleton Ravens (5-2-0).
Men’s Volleyball
The Gael’s men’s volleyball team earned a weekend split thanks to a strong finish to the fifth set, against Toronto on Saturday night for a 25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-16,15-10 win.
On Friday, the Gaels fell in straight sets against the Ryerson Rams 25-17, 25-19, 26-24.
Tyler Scheerhoorn leed the offence in both games with 13 kills against Toronto and five versus the Rams. Jamie Wright set 30 assists against Toronto.
The Gaels (1-3) continue their road trip next Saturday at 8 pm, when they head to Waterloo to take on the Warriors.
Women’s Volleyball
The Gaels women’s volleyball had a pair of road defeats on the weekend, losing to Toronto on Saturday night, 18-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-16 and 25-17, 25-15 25-22 against the Ryerson Rams on Friday.
Shannon Neville hit a game-high 18 kills and made 10 digs. Rookie setter Danielle Blumentrath had 27 assists and 14 digs. The Gaels could not find a way to stop the Rams offense Friday night. Queen’s was led by Brett Hagarty who finished with a team high seven kills and five digs.
The Gaels (2-2) host RMC on Friday at 6 pm at the ARC in their next match.
Men’s Basketball
The Gaels men’s basketball team was in New York this weekend for exhibition play and earned a split, topping Wells College 72-53 and losing 67-53 to Hobart College
The Gaels were led by Greg Faulkner who sunk 24 points to lead all scorers in the victory over Wells.
The Gaels start their OUA regular season on the road Nov. 8 when they play Lakehead University at 8 pm in Thunder Bay.
Women’s Basketball
The Gaels grabbed a 69-60 victory against the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their final game of women’s basketball preseason Saturday night at the ARC.
Jenny Wright was a driving force for the Gaels, leading all scorers with 18 points. ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ also had big nights from Liz Boag who scored 13 points, as well as Andrea Priamo and Abby Dixon, who both put up 11 points.
The win marks the end of the preseason for the Gaels who will be on the road Nov. 7 when they take on Lakehead at 6 pm in their first game of regular season OUA action.
