Gaels put in team effort to support good causes

Members of the Gaels women's basketball team raised nearly $2,500 in support of breast cancer awareness and research, and wore pink warmup T-shirts for the annual Shoot for the Cure game.

 

 

Queen’s student-athletes are known for their dedication and excellence in the classroom and competition, but they also help lead the way in raising awareness and funds for a wide range of good causes at the local, provincial, and national levels.

This drive to support is a year-round effort but has been at the forefront in recent weeks as a number of Gaels teams have stepped up while hosting games on their home court or rink.

“Student-athletes at ֱ are committed to having a positive influence within our community, and are aware of how impactful philanthropic efforts, supported by team initiatives, across a wide breadth of outreach efforts can be,” says Linda Melnick, Executive Director, Athletics & Recreation. "The level of dedication student-athletes put forth in their daily studies, training and competition embeds the values of Athletics & Recreation and Queen’s into our community, resulting in a consistent and meaningful affect across countless groups.

“We are grateful to those who offer their support of these team-driven efforts, and appreciate the commitment of our student-athletes to live what it means to be a Gael.”

Earlier this term, the Gaels women’s basketball team played their annual game, . Through the event the Gaels raised funds – nearly $2,500 – and awareness for breast cancer research.

In February, the women’s hockey team provided a boost for the , a non-profit organization supporting youth struggling with depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns, as well as the programs during a two-game homestand.

At the same time, the women’s and men’s volleyball and basketball teams hosted games in support of the campaign led by the Ontario University Athletics (OUA). The teams wore special T-shirts highlighting the campaign, which started in 2021.

On the ice, the Teddy Bear Toss has been a fundraising staple for the men’s hockey team and the squad, in partnership with the ֱ Children's Healthcare Association, was able to raise $1,200 for the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation as they faced the Nipissing Lakers at the Memorial Centre on Jan. 21.
