Gaels men's volleyball team earns weekend split

Men’s Volleyball
The Queen’s Gaels men’s volleyball team (3-4) picked up a split over the weekend at home, upsetting the No. 8 Guelph Gryphons on Saturday only to tumble to the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday.
On Saturday the Gaels handily defeated the Gryphons (6-2) in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-23 for the upset win at the ARC. Mike Tomlinson was a force in the match for Queen’s with 15 kills, one serving ace and four digs while Markus Trence finished with 12 kills and seven digs and Phillipe Goyer had 11 kills, two serving aces and five digs.
On Sunday the Gaels were defeated by Waterloo (5-4) in four sets 25-15, 25-23, 25-27 and 28-26. Tomlinson had the game-high of 16 kills and 10 digs while Trence came close with 15 kills and 12 digs for the Gaels. ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ libero Ivo Dramov held down the fort for the Gaels with 20 digs
The Gaels are back in action Friday as they host the RMC Paladins at 8 pm and on Saturday in exhibition against Canada's senior men's national team at 8 pm in the ARC main gym.
Women’s Volleyball
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels (4-3) were on the road for their lone game of the weekend, beating the Waterloo Warriors (1-7) in four sets, 25-15, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-23.
The Gaels held off the Warriors thanks to the efforts of Brett Hagarty, Shannon Neville and Niki Slikboer who combined for 34.5 of the Gaels 57 points in the game. Three Gaels had double-digit figures in digs as well with Hagarty leading the way with 17 while Danielle Blumentrath and Ali Shamie shared setter duties finishing with 18 and 22 assists respectively.
The Gaels will return to the court next week when they host Lakehead at the ARC on Friday at 6 pm.
Women’s Hockey
The No. 5 ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Gaels women's hockey team (7-1-2) exploded offensively on Saturday as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 6-1 at the Memorial Centre in Kingston.
The Gaels came out roaring in the first period with a pair of goals from Fiona Lester and another from Clare McKellar for a 3-0 lead. McKellar potted her second in the third and Jessica Wakefield and Addi Halladay rounded out the goal rush. Caitlyn Lahonen made nine saves for the victory.
The Gaels return to action Saturday night when they travel to Waterloo to take on the No. 7 Laurier Golden Hawks (5-2-1).
Men’s Hockey
The Queen’s Gaels men’s hockey (6-5-0) team finished their weekend road trip to Toronto with a win and a loss.
On Saturday, Andrew Wiebe netted both goals for the Gaels as they edged the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-1 at Varsity Arena. Kevin Bailie made 21 saves for his third victory in nine starts.
On Friday, the Gaels recorded a season-high 52 shots but could not bury the equalizer as they were defeated 3-2 by the Ryerson Rams. Kelly Jackson and Braeden Corbeth scored for ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ but Troy Passingham had an outstanding game for the Rams, making 50 saves. Bailie had 37 saves for the Gaels
The Gaels are back on the ice Friday night when they battle the Lakehead Thunderwolves (4-6-2) at 7:30 pm at the Memorial Centre.
Women’s Basketball
The No. 8 Queen’s Gaels women’s basketball team (1-2) picked up a split in their weekend homestand at the ARC in Kingston.
After picking up their first win of the season Friday, beating the Waterloo Warriors (1-3) 67-52, they were upset 56-53 by the Laurier Golden Hawks (3-1) on Saturday.
Jenny Wright led the scoring with 20 points in both games, along with nine and seven rebounds respectively.
Robyn Pearson was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 13 rebounds against Laurier, while on Friday, Liz Boag contributed 12 points and Emily Hazlett added 10 points against the Warriors.
The Gaels travel to Guelph on Friday to face the Gryphons at 6 pm.
Men’s Basketball
The Queen’s Gaels men’s basketball team (0-3) stumbled to a pair of losses at home on the weekend, losing 70-66 to the Waterloo Warriors (1-3) on Saturday and 87-70 against the Laurier Golden Hawks (3-1) at the ARC on Sunday.
The Gaels’ offence was led by Greg Faulkner in both games with 26 points, three rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks against Laurier and 29 points and seven rebounds versus Waterloo.
Cy Samuels added 14 points and seven rebounds against Laurier.
The Gaels return to the hardwood Friday in Guelph as they take on the Gryphons at 8 pm.
