Gaels beat U of T 48-27 for first win

Here's a quick look at the Gaels teams that were in action over the weekend.
Football
The Gaels grabbed their first win of the OUA football season on Saturday, topping Toronto 48-27 at Richardson Stadium.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ got the job done through the air in their Thanksgiving matchup with the Varsity Blues, as starting quarterback Billy McPhee finished with 406 passing yards, going 22-of-35 for three touchdowns and two interceptions.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ took advantage of three first quarter fumbles by Toronto, as Curtis Carmichael caught a 68-yard bomb from McPhee on a corner route to get the Gaels on the board first. Dillon Wamsley's first quarter field goal was also set up by a Toronto fumble, giving ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ a 10-0 lead early on.
Toronto got back into the game, leveling the score but Alex Carroll put ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ back on top 17-10 in the second quarter and Michael Moore blocked a punt to begin the second half. Derek Wiggan recovered the punt for Queen’s, going 75 yards to the three yard line. From there, Justin Gleben punched in another touchdown to make it 24-10.
After Toronto made it 24-17, Carmichael responded for ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ with his second touchdown of the game. When Jesse Andrews put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter, making it 41-20, rookie Nate Hobbs took over quarterback duties. Hobbs connected with Doug Corby on a 60-yard catch and run for the first touchdown in his young Gaels career.
Rookie linebacker Moore continued his standout season for ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, finishing with the punt block, a one handed interception, two forced fumbles, and 4.5 total tackles. Yann Dika-Balotoken had nine solo tackles.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ will take on York next Saturday at Richardson Stadium in the Homecoming game.
Women’s rugby
Miranda Seifert scored three tries as the Gaels topped York 41-21 in a quarterfinal matchup on Friday evening. With the win, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ earns a spot in the OUA semifinals against Guelph.
Seifert got the Gaels on the board just three minutes into the first half and after Karley Heyman made the score 10-0 for ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ with a try of her own, York started to battle back, cutting the Gaels lead to 10-7 in the 20th minute with a converted try. Emma Chown responded for ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ a minute later, and Heyman's conversion restored the Gaels 10-point lead.
York again closed the gap with a trio of penalty kicks to make it 17-16 early in the second half. Heyman, Seifert and Caitie Ryanthen answered the challenge with tries heading into the final 10 minutes of play. York found the endzone again but Seifert replied with her third try of the match.
¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ moves on to play Guelph in the OUA semifinal on the road on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Men’s rugby
The Gaels (5-1) finished their regular season with a staggering 113-0 victory on the road against the Toronto Varsity Blues (0-6) Friday evening.
The Gaels dominated straight from the kickoff with Lucas Rumball putting the first try on the board. This opened the floodgates as the Gaels continued to put down tries, including a standout performance by rookie Marc Levin who took a high ball and broke away from the pack with a 70-metre run to score one of his three tries. At halftime the Gaels were leading the Varsity Blues 64-0. David Worsley finished the game with five conversions to go with a pair of tries.
The Gaels are back on the field Saturday when they go head-to-head with the Western Mustangs at home. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm on Nixon Field.
Men’s soccer
The Gaels picked up a win and a draw over the weekend at Miklas-McCarney Field.
On Saturday, No. 10 Queen’s upset No. 4 Ryerson with a 2-1 victory. Ryerson opened the scoring in the 34th minute but the Gaels would tie it up five minutes into the second half as Eric Koskins buried a header off a Henry Bloemen cross. ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ continued to pour on the offensive pressure and eventually converted in the 64th minute from Kristian Zanette.
The Gaels followed the win with a scoreless draw Sunday against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Maxfield Materne picked up the clean sheet. As a result, ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ remains three points ahead of Toronto for second place in the OUA East Division Standings.
The Gaels return to action for their final game of the regular season Sunday afternoon when they battle RMC at 3:15 pm on Miklas-McCarney field.
Women’s soccer
The Gaels women's soccer team earned a weekend split with both matches at Miklas-McCarney Field. On Saturday, the Gaels crushed Ryerson 4-0 thanks to a pair of goals by Breanna Burton and singles by Jackie Tessier and Jessie de Boer. Keeper Madison Tyrell made seven saves for the clean sheet.
It was a different story Sunday as the Gaels were defeated 2-1 by Toronto. The Varsity Blues opened the scoring nine minutes into the match before the Gaels knotted the score in the 30th minute as Tara Bartram buried her fourth of the season. However, Nicki Parkes tallied her second for the Varsity Blues in the 56th minute to put Toronto ahead for good.
The Gaels (8-3-3) battle the No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees (12-1-0) Wednesday evening at 5 pm at Miklas-McCarney Field.
Women’s Hockey
The No. 3 Gaels women's hockey team showed they deserve their ranking with a pair of dominant wins to open the regular season. On Sunday, the Gaels topped the Laurentian Voyageurs 6-0 at the Memorial Centre. Taryn Pilon had two goals and singles went to Mary Coughlin, Fiona Lester, Kyla Crouse and Alisha Sealey. Stephanie Pascal earned the 21-save shutout. On Saturday, the Gale beat the Nipissing Lakers 5-2. Taryn Pilon had a pair of goals while Courtenay Jacklin, Clare McKellar and Kyla Crouse rounded out the scoring.
The Gaels (2-0-0) return to action Friday at noon in front of over 1,200 school kids to celebrate UN Day of the Girl when they take on the York Lions (0-1-0) at the K-Rock Centre.
Men’s hockey
The ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ men's hockey team opened the regular season at the Memorial Centre with a 4-3 last-minute loss to No. 9 McGill University. After trailing early, the Gaels battled back with goals by Braeden Corbeth, Eric Ming and Tyler Moore. However, McGill took advantage of a tripping penalty as Samuel Labrecque buried the game-winning goal with 14 seconds left. Goalie Kevin Bailie registered 26 saves.
The Gaels (0-1-0) return to action on Thursday when they travel to Oshawa to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks (1-0-1).
Women’s volleyball
The Gaels earned a bronze medal at the Mizuno-McMaster preseason tournament, as they topped York in four sets in the third-place game on Saturday.
York came out strong to start the match, taking the first set 25-22. ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ responded by beating the Lions in three consecutive sets 25-18, 25-14 and 25-15 to close out the match. Katie Hagarty was named a tournament all-star for ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥
The Gaels continue their preseason play on Homecoming Weekend, with a trio of matches against Sherbrooke.
Men’s volleyball
The Gaels men’s volleyball earned a four-game split of Maritimes exhibition swing.
On Monday, the Gaels tumbled 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21 against Dalhousie. A day earlier they lost on straight sets to Dalhousie 25-18, 25-11, 25-19. Earlier in the trip, the Gaels swept the University of New Brunswick 25-21, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-18, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-13.
Cross country
Claire Sumner led the Gaels with a second-place finish to help the women's team place third in the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ Invitational while the men landed a fourth-place result. Sumner finished in a time of 20:46.5 to lead all Gaels women's runners on the day. Following Sumner in the top 10 was Shannen Murray who finished ninth in a time of 22:10.3 while Veronica Allen, Stephaney Daley and Sasha Zarnke rounded out the Gaels scorers on the day coming in 16th, 24th and 26th respectively.
On the men's side, Eric Wynands finished eighth for the Gaels in a time of 32:28.9. Brandon Thomas, Alex Hutton, Eric MacPherson and Joey Stel rounded out the Gaels squad on the day.
The Gaels will also host the 2014 OUA Championship on Oct. 25 at Fort Henry Hill.
