Gaels beat Mustangs at the buzzer

A quick look at Gaels teams that were in action over the weekend:
Men’s Basketball
The Queen’s Gaels men’s basketball squad (5-9) came back from a 17-point deficit to win 75-74 at the buzzer against the Western Mustangs (9-6) Saturday in London.
Patrick Street led the way with 23 points followed by Greg Faulkner who contributed 22 but it was Sukhpreet Singh who found a lane with seconds on the clock to net the winning basket.
On Friday, the Gaels fell to the No. 5 Windsor Lancers (9-4) 93-86 in Windsor. Faulkner scored 25 points in the loss while Street netted 19.
The Gaels will be on the road to Hamilton next weekend when they play the No. 4 McMaster Marauders at 2 pm on Feb. 7.
Women’s Basketball
Jenny Wright led all scorers with 35 points as the Queen’s Gaels women’s basketball team (9-5) picked up an 86-72 victory over the Western Mustangs (5-10) on Saturday in London.
The outburst marked the first time that Wright broke the 30-point mark and ended just two points off the Gaels women's basketball mark for points in a game set by Claire Meadows back in 2005.
On Friday the Gaels fell 89-81 against the No. 1 Windsor Lancers (11-1) at the St. Denis Centre in Windsor in a rematch between last year's OUA Championship participants. Wright scored a game high 21 points.
On Feb. 7 the Gaels will be on the road again to go head-to-head with the No. 8 McMaster Marauders with tip-off scheduled for 6 pm in Hamilton.
Men’s Hockey
Goaltender Kevin Bailie collected 39 saves and Andrew Wiebe added a pair of tallies as the Queen’s Gaels men's hockey team (11-12-1) topped the Laurentian Voyageurs (12-9-3) 4-1 Saturday in Sudbury.
Wiebe opened the scoring with a powerplay tally in the first and added an empty-netter. Eric Ming and Kelly Jackson also scored for the Gaels.
The Gaels return to action Thursday night when they take on RMC (0-20-3) in the 29th annual Carr-Harris Cup. Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm at the Rogers K-Rock Centre. For ticket information visit www.gogaelsgo.com/chcup
Women's Volleyball
The Queen’s Gaels women’s volleyball team (11-6) fell to the No. 6 Ottawa Gee-Gees (13-3) in straight sets Saturday, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-19.
Brett Hagarty ended the match with seven kills and seven digs while Caroline Livingston contributed three kills and one serving ace.
The Gaels are back in action as they hit the road next Friday to take on the McMaster Marauders at 6 pm.
Men's Volleyball
On Saturday the Queen’s Gaels men’s volleyball squad (11-7) fell to the Western Mustangs (9-8) in four sets, 18-25, 25-19, 25-21 and 25-13.
The top scorer for the Gaels was Markus Trence with 16 kills and four digs while Mike Tomlinson had 10 kills, two serving aces and four digs.
On Sunday they Gaels slipped to another four-set loss to the Windsor Lancers (7-10) 25-22, 22-25, 25-22 and 25-22. Philippe Goyer led the attack with 13 kills.
The Gaels are back on the court Friday, Feb. 6 as they face the No. 1 McMaster Marauders in Hamilton.
