Around this time last year, Advancement staff member Karen Logan was in the middle of treatments for breast cancer. To support her and give her strength, colleagues at Queen’s started a team for the CIBC Run for the Cure – a team called K. Lo’s Krew that ended up being 142 members-strong, raised more than $41,000 for breast cancer research, and was named the top fundraising post-secondary team in Canada.
This year, Ms. Logan is still the source of inspiration but now as a survivor and cancer-free, she is no longer the main cause to support. Instead, she is the reason to celebrate and to once again get together and support a national cause. And this run day, Sunday, Oct. 6, Ms. Logan won’t be watching from the sidelines – she’ll strap on her own sneakers and run for K. Lo’s Krew alongside her colleagues, friends and family members.
“It was almost surreal for me last year. I was in between treatments, just finished chemo, but I had this great big, pink, glittery team there behind me, supporting me,” says Ms. Logan, Stewardship Officer in Advancement. “Now all that’s passed, the treatment, but the support element is still there. I’m surprised by how many people are participating – it’s amazing, and overwhelming, too.”
Ms. Logan says she’s thankful for the wonderful people she’s met over the past year, including several women her age in the community who were also battling the disease and provided a wonderful support group. She’s also grateful for her incredible colleagues, in particular Jodi Snowdon and Kim Wilkinson, both Advancement employees who spearheaded K. Lo’s Krew last year and continue the tradition this year as team captains.
“Karen is still very much the focus of the team. We’re now celebrating her new survivor status and running with her instead of for her,” says Ms. Snowdon, Director, Annual Giving. “We’re really excited. We’ll be running with our kids, celebrating her journey together.”
K. Lo’s Krew already has almost 80 members and is quickly working to reach its $10,000 goal. To learn more and join the team, visit the .
