The life and legacy of Canada’s first and founding prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, was the subject of discussion and debate at a recent conference at Queen’s. Sir John A Macdonald: Canada Then and Now was held on Saturday, January 11, 2014, a day that would have marked his 199th birthday.

Jointly presented by Queen’s University’s School of Policy Studies, Law School and the non-profit, non-partisan Sir John A. Macdonald Bicentennial Commission, the conference was attended by some of the country’s leading academics and political figures.

Presenters included the Honourable Chris Alexander, Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, TV Ontario broadcaster and journalist Steve Paikin, Anthony Wilson-Smith, President of Historica Canada, and the Honourable Barbara McDougall, a life-long student of Macdonald who served as Canada’s ground-breaking Minister of Foreign Affairs in the early 1990s.
