What was it like to live in ancient Rome? This course will introduce the students to the major aspects of ancient Roman society, literature, and culture. We will look at ancient Rome on its own terms through the examination of primary sources of all types (artistic, archaeological, and literary sources in translation). We will also evaluate ancient Rome’s complex legacy in modern societies.
A detailed analysis of political and military history will not be attempted (see CLST 201). Instead, the emphasis will be placed on the religious, cultural, and intellectual developments of ancient Rome in general.
