    Thérèse Gauthier Lynch

    – MD’55

    Spring 2024

Thérèse Gauthier Lynch died at age 91 on Feb. 13 at her home in Pittsford N.Y. (Rochester). She is survived by her children, Jennifer (Michael O'Leary) Lynch, Paula (John) Feroleto, Michael (Michelle) Lynch, Terrance (Rose Audette) Lynch, and Anna Lynch; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her brother, Joseph (Susan) Gauthier.

She was born on Nov. 19, 1932 in Calgary. After having won, at age 16, the provincial scholarship to attend Queen’s, she got onto a train in Calgary in 1949 to Kingston – doing so over her mother's strong objections that she should instead go to the secretarial pool school in downtown Calgary, as respectable girls did. She was also only able to attend because her father worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad, so she could ride the train to Kingston for free.

She was a graduate of the Class of 1955 and practiced anesthesiology for 35 years at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., before a second career as a hospital administrator.

    Dr. William Robert “Bob” Whyte

    – MD’55

    Spring 2024

Dr. William Robert “Bob” Whyte peacefully passed away on Feb. 23, 2024 in his 93rd year. Bob was married to Catherine Mary Leah “Mitzi” Whyte, the absolute love of his life for 66 years. He was the proud father of Bill (Elaine) Whyte, Patti Whyte, Cathy (Lorin) PressĂ©, Sandy (Larry) Jones, and Jill (Daniel) Greben. Loving grandfather to Zack (Taylor), Jesse, Graeme, Nicole (Justin), Michelle (Tyler), Michael, Alexander, Rachel, and Jon; and great grandfather to Henry, Theodore, Callie, Logan, and Reese.

He was born and raised in Arnprior, Ont. and graduated from Queen’s School of Medicine in 1955. It was in Kingston where he and Mitzi first met, and they married in Ottawa on Nov. 19, 1955, before settling down in St. Catharines.

Bob was extremely passionate about his work as a physician and was well-respected by his colleagues at the St. Catharines General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital, as well as by his patients. He was an anesthetist and a family practitioner.

Bob enjoyed travelling the world with Mitzi, hosting big family parties, reading newspapers and books every day, spending time on his porch, hiking, fishing trips up north and watching football and hockey. He was the beloved patriarch and “poppa” of our big, tight-knit family and was never too old to play with his grandkids and great grandkids. His laugh, sense of humour and sense of fun were infectious. Even amidst the joyful chaos of a big family, he made sure that every one of us felt special. He lived his life to the fullest, and while our family is grateful that he enjoyed 92 wonderful years, no amount of time would ever feel like enough for us.

    Scott Garland

    – JD’22

    Spring 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved son, brother and grandson at his home in Toronto on Feb. 6, 2024. Scott was 27 and had just begun a brilliant career as a lawyer with McCarthy, Hansen and Company. Scott was the cherished son of Kim (nee Todd) and Ross Garland; loving brother of Katie Brown (Shawn); and dear grandson of Catherine Aspinell (Ron, predeceased), Trevor Garland (predeceased), Jessie Todd, and Henry Todd (Pauline). He will be forever remembered lovingly by his aunts and uncles, Lynn Todd, Terri Crough (Mike), Jim Todd (Vicki), Deane Garland (predeceased), Scott Garland (predeceased); his cousins, Jode, Jensen, Lou (Justin), Amy, Michael, Uri, Tommy, and Winnie. He will be deeply missed by his wide circle of friends and co-workers. His dog Mango, a rescue dog from Mexico, has lost his best friend.

Scott was born and raised in Peterborough, Ont. where he attended St. Catherine’s Elementary School and then Lakefield College School (LCS). After graduating from LCS, he obtained a BA (hons.) in History from the University of Western Ontario. As an undergraduate, Scott was named to the Dean’s Honour List and focused his studies on the development of international human rights laws in the twentieth century. He then pursued his law degree and received his JD from Queen’s.

While at law school, he was named to the Dean’s Honour List and received the Global Law Scholarship for his studies at Bader College, where he earned his Certificate in Public International Law. Scott received a Public Interest Internship Award for his summer work as a Debwewin Summer Law Student at NokiiwinTribal Council in Thunder Bay, where he took pride in providing a public legal education session on An Act Respecting First Nations, MĂ©tis and Inuit Children Youth and Families.

Scott was called to the Bar in 2023 and was working his dream job at one of Toronto’s most prestigious Family Law firms, McCarthy, Hansen and Company (MHC). While at MHC, Scott was a key team member on a complex appellate mandate that will change the law for vulnerable people. In addition to his technical skills, Scott was known for his innate empathy and ability to “see the way” through a problem, making him a very special lawyer and a very special person. His dedication and strong work ethic will be missed dearly by his colleagues and the families whom he served so well.

Scott had many passions: he loved nature, poetry, reading, creating new vegan recipes, collecting vinyl, and adored playing with his dog. He was a fantastic athlete and excelled in rugby and hockey. His commitment to veganism, animal rights, and human rights was unparalleled.

    Joel H. Mazer

    – BSc’54

    Spring 2024

Joel H. Mazer of Collingwood, Ont., died in Bancroft, Ont., while visiting with his son at his beloved Lake St. Peter, on Jan. 9. He was 91 years old. His passing was peaceful, and Joel was blessed with an active and lucid mind to his last minutes. He leaves his children, Michael, Adam, and Andrew; and his 10 grandchildren; and was predeceased by his beloved wife, Catharine, and daughter, Meredith.

After graduation, Joel assumed management roles in the family’s fashion jewelry manufacturing operations, re-engineering the casting and plating departments. Eventually, as CEO, he assumed responsibility for designing much of the product line.

His gifts and capabilities ranged from artistry to engineering, from award-winning gardening to athletics. A self-taught classical pianist, whose ear was trained by his cellist mother, he filled the house with FĂĽr Elise. He sought recreation through drag racing with his beloved XKE Jaguar convertible and taking canoe trips in Algonquin.

Broadly read, he loved to discuss history and philosophy, theology and aesthetics, logic and the future. Much of this took place during bouts of crib over his brass cribbage board at the kitchen table looking out over his blooming garden beds. This is Joel’s heritage.
