David Bakhurst, George Whalley Distinguished University Professor and John and Ella G. Charlton Professor of Philosophy, will hold a Visiting Fellowship at Exeter College, Oxford, April–June 2022.
David writes that, “The fellowship will allow me to begin work on a new project which will bring together different strands in my past work: my efforts to develop a broadly particularist account of moral judgement; my work in philosophy of education and ‘the formation of reason’; and my interest in the ‘quartet’ of women philosophers—Iris Murdoch, Elizabeth Anscombe, Mary Midgley and Philippa Foot—whose work is finally beginning to get the attention it deserves. I hope the result will be an account of ethical formation that casts light on the theory and practice of moral education. It will be wonderful to have the chance to catch up with colleagues in the UK and to be back at Exeter, the college where I began my academic career as a junior research fellow nearly 40 years ago.”
