Queen’s University marked the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on Wednesday with community members taking part in a memorial for the victims of the Dec. 6, 1989 shooting at Polytechnique Montreal.

In the annual event, hosted by the Engineering Society and Smith Engineering at ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥, 14 women, representing students, staff, and faculty, held roses, lit candles, and read a brief outline of each of the victims, which included 12 engineering students, one nursing student, and one staff member. A total of 14 others were injured in the shooting.

The national flag was also lowered to mark the day.

A key part of the ongoing remembrance is a permanent Dec. 6 memorial in Beamish-Munro Hall. The memorial was designed by Queen’s alumna Haley Adams (Sc’21) and was unveiled in 2020.
