Decolonizing Knowledge and the Role of Relationships in Research: A Personal Journey

by: Dr. mutindi ndunda, Associate Professor; Department of Teaching and Learning, College of Charleston, USA

In this presentation, mutindi ndunda will share her academic journey, beginning with her experiences growing up in a modern polygamous family and the critical role of intervention agents in shaping her educational trajectory. Drawing on her research with Kilome women and communities affected by AIDS in Kenya, ndunda will explore the importance of relationships in research, emphasizing reciprocity and the need to decolonize knowledge. She will reflect on her own experiences navigating Western academic expectations and frameworks that did not resonate with her lived reality. The presentation will also delve into the integration of technology as a tool for empowerment in resource-limited settings, and the complexities of conducting research that challenges privilege, embraces decolonial perspectives, and strives for social transformation. Attendees will gain insights into the ongoing process of decolonizing knowledge and the potential for research to bring about meaningful change.
