    Description:

The Open Art Histories Pedagogy Institute poses teaching and learning as an opportunity to review and reimagine the knowledge ecologies of art history and the arts interdisciplines. This lecture reflects on arts work (noun) and art’s work (verb) at the university, including the material realities of teaching as study, learning as aesthetic experience, and education as decolonizing praxis. The focus on arts/art’s work provides metaperspective on the story of art that has been told from the time of nation, capital, and coloniality and also allows for jumps into the spacetimes of art’s alternate histories.

Sue Shon, Ph.D. is a scholar-teacher of visual culture and critical race, ethnic, and diasporic studies committed to study, struggle, and solidarity. She researches the co-development of aesthetic culture, liberal humanism, and biopolitical visual order and has published in Media-N, American Literature, and other venues. As Assistant Professor of Critical + Cultural Studies at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Sue’s intellectual labors take form primarily in teaching 4/4 and in fugitive learning with student and faculty comrades.

Supported by SSHRC and the Principal's Development Fund.
