After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1882, John Macgillivray taught at Albert College in Belleville, Ontario for two years.
He then departed for Liepzig University, where he earned a doctorate in French and German.
He was appointed to the teaching staff of ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ in 1888 as the first professor of modern languages.
He is buried in the Cataraqui Cemetery.
