Emergency Medicine, Department of

¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ has a strong tradition in Emergency Medicine in Canada. It was established as one of the first full time Emergency Medicine groups in 1971 and gained University status as a division in the Department of Surgery in 1973. The first residents graduated from the program in 1977.

In 1978, the Department created a three-year postgraduate program in Emergency Medicine. Once specialty status was recognized by the Royal College, the program was modified to meet the new requirements and has continued since then. The first fellowships were awarded in 1983.

The department achieved full Departmental status in 1996, becoming the first Canadian University Department of Emergency Medicine. Physicians staff emergency departments at the Hotel Dieu Hospital and at Kingston General Hospital.
