I have observed Ramtin in his roles as both a Teaching Assistant and a Researcher.
As a Teaching Assistant... Ramtin provided supportive communication through continual support, by initiating open conversations about the normalcy of academic struggles. For example, he offered monthly group sessions where students could share their challenges and solutions, sharing their experiences and approaches in learning coding and some of their approaches to meditation during overwhelming times. He also used constructive feedback in which he implemented peer-review approaches during coding tutorials, where students could anonymously submit and review each other's code. This not only improved their coding skills but also built a supportive community and led to enhanced students' confidence and reduced feelings of incompetence. They also learned about each other's approaches in solving the same problems. Ramtin provided extended support by setting up a virtual help desk available during exams and high-stress periods. This resource offered real-time assistance and stress management tips, which were crucial in helping students manage exam anxiety and improve their focus. Also, he provided a list of available resources related to course materials as well as some resources on or off-campus related to mental health so students could ensure that they benefited from enough support during overwhelming times.
As a Researcher... Ramtin participated in a research project where he developed a set of interactive workshops that taught students effective stress management techniques. These workshops included activities such as guided group discussions, role-playing scenarios to practice coping strategies and mindfulness sessions. His initiatives helped students learn practical skills to manage stress, which improved their overall well-being and academic performance. Through his mentorship program, such as the one in the 'Let's Talk Science', Ramtin focused on stress management techniques for the high-pressure environment of academic research. He provided workshops on balancing work and life which aimed at helping junior researchers manage their mental health and be productive during their research projects.
Ramtin is proactive and practical in his contributions to improving mental health and his efforts in ensuring that the academic environment prioritizes well-being, alongside educational excellence.

Mental health, to me, is about creating a balanced, supportive, and understanding environment where individuals feel safe to express themselves and seek help. It means recognizing the importance of mental well-being in our daily lives and promoting practices that foster resilience, self-awareness, and empathy. By prioritizing mental health, we not only improve individual lives but also build a stronger, more inclusive community where everyone can thrive.
I support student mental health by fostering an inclusive and empathetic learning environment where students feel valued and heard. This includes being approachable, actively listening to their concerns, and providing resources and guidance as needed. I also integrate mental health awareness into my teaching practices by promoting work-life balance, encouraging open discussions about mental well-being, and accommodating diverse needs. Educators and staff play a crucial role in enhancing student mental health and well-being. We are often the first point of contact for students facing challenges, and our support can make a significant difference. By creating safe, respectful, and supportive spaces, we help students build resilience and develop coping strategies. Our proactive approach to mental health promotion, through workshops, accessible resources, and supportive policies, empowers students to thrive academically and personally.
Student mental health is a fundamental aspect of academic success and overall well-being. It's important to recognize that mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of their background or achievements. By normalizing conversations around mental health and reducing stigma, we can create a more supportive and understanding community. I believe in the power of peer support and the importance of building a network where students feel comfortable seeking help from each other as well as from professionals. Additionally, continuous training for educators and staff on mental health issues is vital to ensure we are well-equipped to support our students effectively. Our collective efforts can make a lasting impact on the mental health and well-being of our student community.
