Mental health, to me, means a holistic state of well-being that encompasses emotional, psychological, and social aspects of our lives. It is about how we think, feel, and act, and it influences our ability to handle stress, build relationships, and make decisions. Good mental health is not merely the absence of mental illness, but the presence of positive characteristics such as resilience, self-awareness, and the capacity to experience joy and empathy. It allows persons to realize their potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute meaningfully to their community. Prioritizing mental health means recognizing its importance at every stage of life and ensuring we create environments where everyone feels supported and valued.

Supporting student mental health involves creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where students feel safe, respected, and valued. One of the ways that I support student mental health is by maintaining open communication with all of the students I teach. I strive to maintain an open-door policy, encouraging students to share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. As well as, regular check-ins during class time and actively listening to their concerns, as I believe these are crucial to fostering positive mental health.

Educators and staff play a pivotal role in fostering a supportive environment that fosters mental health and wellbeing. I believe that educators and staff create safe spaces in the class room where students can feel safe to express themselves without judgement. As well, educators and staff can implement inclusive teaching practices which respect diverse backgrounds and experiences, helping all students to feel valued and understood. Lastly, educators and staff lead by example by managing our own stress, seeking help when needed, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
